                     'QUOTES OF THE WEEK'

"Historically, unions were created to improve working conditions and worker's salaries.  Of course, employers were not very happy with that trend of changing the status quo and repression was often brutal.  Eventually, things evolved and employers started to see the advantages of collective bargaining; only one group to deal with, no more case-to-case settlements and a form of self discipline among the workers.  Some moments were a bit bumpy along the way but, all in all, everyone came to the same consensus:  employers and workers are sailing the same boat and it's going to be easier to avoid sinking if they work together....

.....Unions have lower turnover rates, better employer-employee communication and better job standards....

....The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) was formed to provide for and protect workers in the electrical profession.....

....The IBEW prioritizes wage inequities, fringe benefits, health and dental benefits, pension plans, vacation time, job security and workplace protection, making it undeniably beneficial to its members....

....Overall, it is m ore beneficial to belong to a unions and the IBEW as opposed to working in a non-unionized workplace for the various reasons outlined above."

The above are excerpts from the 2012/13 IBEW 1st District Scholarship essay winners on 'The Benefits of Being in the IBEW'
