The next phase deals with specific health issues and will
take the form of workshops led by health professionals, experts
in their fields. Program information will be provided in these
sessions. Sessions will include such topics as:
- diabetes prevention and self-management
- stress management
- heart health
- women’s health
- foot care
- smoking cessation
- nutrition
- weight management
- benefits of physical activity
We will implement ongoing workplace communication through the
IBEW web newsletter, posters, activity calendar giving details
of the available programs, motivational speakers for union
meetings, and local medical resource directory for accessing
appropriate healthcare professionals. From time to time there
will be ‘Wellness Packs’ containing products and information
geared to healthy living.
This is an IBEW supported initiative which will guarantee
your confidentiality in all matters pertaining to your health.
The materials will be produced by qualified healthcare
professionals and all local execution of programs will also be
directed by qualified professionals.
This program has been developed by the Canadian Diabetes Care
Guide and will be available for implementation by each Union
Local. For further information please contact:

Remembrance Day
Many people have mentioned how the respect for Remembrance
Day is starting to slip away. In the past, this day was used as
an opportunity to reflect on the contributions our country has
made to world peace and remember the lives sacrificed by so many
men, women, and their families for our benefit.
Recently, an Ontario MP has recommended that Remembrance Day
be considered a national holiday to remember those who gave the
ultimate gift for their country and fellow man.
Presently, there are some provinces that observe Remembrance
Day as a holiday but some others do not.
We urge you to have your membership contact their MPs and
show their support for November 11th to become a
national holiday.
Conferences
There are two conferences to announce since last month’s list
of upcoming conferences;
- The 2005 Canadian Legislative Conference has now
been re-scheduled for May 30 – 31, 2005 at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel in Ottawa. Registration forms and further information
will be out in early 2005 and will also be available through
the Building and Construction Trades Department website at
http://www.buildingtrades.ca/.
- CLC Conference on Balancing Work & Family will take
place from Friday, March 4 – Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the
Ottawa Marriott Hotel. Conference details will be posted
soon on the CLC website at
http://www.clc-ctc.ca/.
Comments
This is a reminder to all construction locals that there are
now revised Canadianized New Member Orientation kits available
from the First District Office.
Thanks again to the Locals for contributing a Local Lines
Article to the last IBEW Journal. For the October Journal,
credit goes to Locals 120, 424, 586 and with special mention to
Local 804 for their picture showing 22 members who volunteered
their time for two Habitat for Humanity projects.
Our sympathy goes to our Brothers and Sisters south of the
Canadian border, as they have to fight for another four years to
retain their union rights under another anti-union Bush regime.
