The Squandering of America:

How the Failure of Our Politics Undermines Our Prosperity, by Robert Kuttner, Knopf Publishing, 2007, 337 pages, hardcover. In "The Squandering of America: How the Failure of Our Politics Undermines Our Prosperity," author Robert Kuttner offers a new model of managed capitalism that can deliver security and opportunity, while rekindling democracy as a check on concentrated wealth. Kuttner links outsourcing of jobs, declining incomes, layoffs, health care and retirement burdens to the consolidation of political and economic power by a narrow elite, which blocks the ability of government to restore broad prosperity to the majority of citizens. Kuttner, founder and co-editor of the magazine "American Prospect" and a columnist for the "Boston Globe," demonstrates how our economy has fallen hostage to a casino of financial speculation, creating instability as well as inequality. He debunks alarmist claims about supposed economic hazards, such as Social Security and Medicare, and exposes the genuine dangers—hedge funds and private equity run amok, subprime lenders, Wall Street middlemen and America’s dependence on foreign central banks. He describes how globalization of commerce has been used by business less to promote free trade than to escape the balanced regulation that delivered the widespread abundance in the decades after World War II. While our financial security has weakened under the Bush administration, Kuttner also faults many Democrats for failing to offer compelling alternatives. "The Squandering of America" sets out a path for reclaiming our democratic politics and our prosperity.

The Real McCain:

Why Conservatives Don't Trust Him—and Why Independents Shouldn't, by Cliff Schecter, Polipoint Press, 2008, 187 pages, paperback. "The Real McCain: Why Conservatives Don't Trust Him—And Why Independents Shouldn't" by author Cliff Schecter is a hard-hitting profile that explores the gap between the public record of John McCain and his media image. Drawing on a range of sources and adding his own perspective, Schecter guides us through McCain’s long history of expedient flip-flops on the Iraq invasion and occupation, the religious right, campaign finance reform, torture, abortion, gay rights and other issues. Far from a straight-talking maverick, McCain emerges as a temperamental political chameleon who will do or say almost anything to become president of the United States. Schecter successfully paints the real picture of the man behind the funny, happy-go-lucky public persona we've seen on the campaign trail--the often irascible, irritable and utterly unpredictable character who wants to occupy the Oval Office. While the author acknowledges McCain's service in Vietnam, he stresses that what's most crucial to prospective voters is what McCain has done since leaving the military service. Schecter is a senior fellow at Working America, the AFL-CIO's community affiliate, and political commentator who has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, NPR and other national media outlets.

 Outright Barbarous:

How the Violent Language of the Right Poisons American Democracy, by Jeffrey Feldman.

A teacher at New York University and is editor of the blog Frameshop, Feldman says the corporate media has allowed a host of right-wing talk show hosts and commentators to foul the airwaves with hate, bigotry and shrill discourse that silences opposition and destroys any chance for serious, civil debate. He also dissects the technique and "framing" strategies of the right and examines the linguistic and cognitive implications of what these "outright barbarous" media personalities have wrought. $14.95 Find Out More and Order Today:

The Disposable American

"The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences" is an eye-opening account of the devastating impact of layoffs on individuals at all income levels. Louis Uchitelle traces the rise of job security in the United States to its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s and the factors that caused a U-turn beginning in the 1970s. He chronicles the experiences of both executives and workers. He follows three CEOs of tool manufacturer Stanley Works from 1968 through 2003 and shows how each of the CEOs gradually become more willing than his predecessor to lay off workers. Uchitelle makes clear that layoffs are counterproductive and rarely promote efficiency or profitability in the long term. This is a passionate and compelling book that recognizes in today's global economy some layoffs must occur. However, Uchitelle argues that the government must create policies that encourage companies to restrict layoffs and generate jobs to supplement the present shortfall. Uchitelle gives specific recommendations for achieving these goals and persuasive arguments that workers, businesses and the nation will benefit as a result.

Hostile Takeover

"Hostile Takeover: How Big Money and Corruption Conquered Our Government--And How We Take It Back," by David Sirota, describes the conquest of America's democratic government by Big Money interests. Sirota, a former congressional staffer, says although major, high-profile scandals are roiling Washington, D.C., today, the most prevalent examples of the hostile takeover are "the almost invisible, day to day corruption tales that plague American politics. One day, it is a little-noticed amendment in a big spending bill in Congress. The next day it is political reporters refusing to address major economic challenges that average Americans are faced with. And still the next day it is a politician boldly lying to the public about who is behind what they are doing." This book is written for regular Americans who want to know what is happening to their democracy, not for the political elite
