AFL-CIO: New Ad Refutes the Myths About Employee Free Choice...
You Have A Right !
Did you know Federal Law gives workers in most employment
situations the right to join together to form a Union, or to simply work in
concert with each other to better their wages, benefits and working conditions.
This Law "The National Labor Relations Act" or NLRA
was originally put into effect in 1935 as the Wagner Act. It has remained as
workers protector from unfair and unscrupulous employers to this day with
various amendments. It is administered by the National
Labor Relations Board. Click on their site to find out more about
your rights, as an employee, and how you can better yourself by organizing into
a Union with the IBEW.
LU
978 continues Winning Ways at American Electric Power.
Business Manager Chuck
Coleman and Organizer Merle Wyckle continue to be a nemesis to American Electric
Power as the Local won TWO MORE NLRB elections on October 4, 2001. Both Units
involved employees of Kentucky Power, A Subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP)
in Pikeville and Paintsville,
Kentucky. One unit consists of 8 Meter Readers and Customer Service Reps, and the other was for
35 Production & Maintenance Personnel. We welcome the 43 newest AEP members
/ employees to our Growing
IBEW Family. Local Union 978 reports it now represents 19 bargaining units in
Kentucky, West Virginia & Virginia.
Stripping
Works for LU 1076.
Local 1076 has gained
voluntary recognition from a Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor in
Toledo, Ohio. After the Local successfully stripped several of NORON HVAC
Company's employees the contractor has agreed to sign the Local Union's HVAC
agreement. This is a joint agreement with the Plumbers & Pipefitters UA, LU 50. The two Local Unions
will share in the representation of these new members. Congratulations Business
Manager, Bob Shaw for a great job.
LU 1340 organizes under the
Service Contract Act
Congratulations to Local 1340 for Very Convincing NLRB Election
Victory with Griffin Services at Ft. Monroe, VA. This Maintenance
unit is under the Service Contract Act and Local 1340 scored a 28-9 victory.
Welcome to
the IBEW, Ft. Monroe Griffin Employees. Way to go gang!!! The
Local is also looking at these workers counterparts at Ft. Eustis, and has
started a card signing effort. Come join us Griffin employees. Together we will
be stronger and better. 2001
Who
Says Tree Trimmers Can't Be Organized
Local
71 in Columbus, Ohio has scored big Victories for Tree Trimmer employees Working
for Nelson Tree Company. In 1999 LU Organizer Pat Grice got involved with
helping a group of tree trimmers on work related problems. He filed Petitions to
represent the workers in late 1999. The LU lost the first such election, but
Grice continued to stay with it. Then in late 1999 the LU won two separate
elections involving nearly 100 workers.
Negotiations commenced
and in June of 2000 the Local had their first "Tree Trimmer Agreement"
with Nelson and it covered workers in three areas. Most performed work on AEP
properties in Zanesville Ohio, Canton-Steubenville Ohio area and in the Wheeling
West Virginia area. Originally assisted by B.M. Wally Sickles and I.R. David
Appleman, organizer Grice finished the negotiations and brought the dignity of a
Union Agreement to these workers.
Next Grice and LU 71
moved on to Dayton Ohio where they have now won an NLRB election in January of
this year 2001 with the Nelson employees performing work for Dayton Power &
Light. They are now in negotiations with the company. It's hat's off to
Organizer Pat Grice and fellow organizer Butch Thrash, who also assisted on this
project. And of course all of LU 71 for a job well done.
