The Importance of Training

Labor Unions just like companies like to keep their Officers, Representatives and Members well educated. By keeping our Local Union Leaders and Members trained and educated,
we can ensure that they are able to compete with their management counterparts.

Education Department Trainer and International Representative Ed Hill Jr. Instructs Members of Local Union 2220 Lexington Kentucky and Employees of Schneider Electric. Officers and Stewards of Local Union 2220 attended Two Days of Training, Local Union Leadership followed by Steward Training on Day Two.

The IBEW Education Department with the Assistance of 4th District International Representatives offer Leadership Development Classes, and a wide range of Courses and Programs to keep our leaders on the cutting edge of employment and work related legal issues. Below is a partial list of some of the educational opportunities available to our Local Unions and it's Members.

Leadership Training

Local Union Leadership Training

The IBEW course Local Union Leadership Training is designed for all officers of the Local Union.  The six-hour course focuses on two critical areas: Managing and Leading.

  • As managers, the Local Officers are instructed on key functional responsibilities of their position as defined by the IBEW Constitution and Basic Laws and Policies.  Collaboration between officers during training increases each officer’s understanding of his/her team members’ responsibilities enabling them to work effectively and efficiently together.
  • The Leadership component of the training provides the officers with proven leadership and motivational tools, techniques and vital economic statistics they can use as a team to build a strong, unified local union.

The Local Union Leadership training is available as needed and is recommended whenever new officers are elected.  Request this program through the District Vice President’s office.

Amplifying Membership Participation = Strength (AMPS)

Research proves teams of strong, but diverse, individuals are the most capable to address challenges, resolve issues, and pave the best path forward for any group or organization.  The IBEW recognizes the importance, value, and need to involve and leverage all individuals’ strengths and abilities to meet the challenges of our changing global environment and workforce.  The 1-day AMPS program dispels the misconceptions and myths about diversity and inclusion, helps leaders achieve greater awareness of themselves and others, and introduces how they can leverage interaction between members to build relationships and solidarity across the membership.  Multi-media presentations and exercises are utilized to help leaders evaluate their individual roles and to create an action plan for moving full inclusion forward.  International Representatives provide the program.  Contact your district’s Vice Presidents office to schedule the training.

Stand Alone Modules

Common Sense Economics

This one to two-hour program engages members in a discussion about the connection between wealth and power and their job and family life.  The program’s objectives are to present a view of the economy from a worker’s perspective; to help union members challenge assumptions and ask questions about the economy; and to connect economic issues to the union’s goals--organizing, community action, legislative and political action, and bargaining.  Schedule the Common Sense Economics program by contacting the District Vice President’s office.

One-on-One Communications

The One-on-One Communications program is a proven and effective communication system.  This union-building tool helps solve one of labor’s most pressing problems:  lack of interactive communication between union leaders and rank-and-file members.  This union building, two-way communication system helps Local Unions carry out membership education, recruit new members, improve communication, get information to members during negotiations, and building solidarity and pride in the union.  It enables the Local Union leadership to reach everyone, including those who may be less active in the union, are unable to attend meetings or do not receive other communications media. Schedule the International Representative provided program through the district Vice President's office.

Building the Local Union (Through Member Involvement)

This two-hour class address’s one of the major challenges faced by local union leaders today--the challenge of getting our members involved in the union.  It explores the possibility that the way we run our locals may contribute to our members' apathy and offers methods for building a cohesive union by involving members where they work without requiring a lot of their time. The class also helps our leaders understand that our members are the fundamental source of the union’s strength and that our ability to get good contracts and resolve problems stems from their support and willingness to participate in the union. This unique class is also a part of the IBEW's Local Union Leadership Training course.  Furthermore, it is appropriate for Progress Meetings and Department Conferences.
