Los Angeles Organizer Likes Convention’s Focus on Youth

September 18, 2011

Gary Parker, a journeyman inside wireman, participated in a panel discussion entitled “Mission Possible” at the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus meeting on Saturday. Parker, an EWMC member-at-large who has been working as an organizer for Los Angeles Local 11 for five years, said:

L.A. is a city of great diversity, not just in people, but in wealth. In construction, there is a very heavy Latino presence. We need to work to uncover the fears, the needs and the dreams of these workers. The IBEW is the right choice for workers who want better health care insurance coverage and working conditions, but we need to convince workers through our actions to trust a union that some of them have heard bad things about.

With more than 7,000 local members, Local 11 has about 1,000 journeymen out of work. Proud of Local 11’s consistent efforts to expand its market presence and engage its members, Parker sees the 38th IBEW Convention as a vehicle for “fulfilling our great responsibility to the members in both of our countries.”

Attending his second IBEW Convention as part of a group of 17 Local 11 delegates and guests. He says:

I love the focus on bringing young members to the convention. We need to embrace and encourage the people who will be the future of our union.
