Pictured are Brothers Bill Schreader (left front) and Mark Grozio (right front) installing solar panels on Local 237s roof last summer. In the rear are Anthony Pereira (standing) of Alternative Power, Inc., which oversaw the installation, and Dr. Gay E. Canough, a physicist at ETM Solar Works, who served as an on site consultant.

As reported in the November 2000 issue of the IBEW Journal (p.23), Local 237, Niagara Falls, New York, is now generating power for its union hall through the use of solar panels installed by local members. The sunlight on the rooftop modules produces DC electricity that goes to inverters that produce AC energy for the building requirements, while any excess power is fed into the Niagara Mohawk system grid, for which the local receives a rebate. Several IBEW locals have developed expertise in this type of work and are looking at solar power as a major source of work in the future.
