Message from International President Emeritus J. J. Barry to all IBEW Members

January/February 2001 IBEW Journal

A wise philosopher once said that life is a series of crossroads.  If so, I have come to another in my life.  As we enter a new century and anew millennium, the time is right for me to step down as International President.

Our great Brotherhood has been one of the important forces in my life, as it has for so many within our ranks.  I was proud to follow in my father's footsteps by entering the trade and honored to be initiated into the trade and honored to be initiated into the Brotherhood in 1943.  How long ago that looks on paper, yet how short it seems to me.  My life's journey has taken me past many milestones from my days as an apprentice to the highest office in our union.  At all times, I had one priority-to do what is right and best for all of our brothers and sisters.  History will judge whether or not I succeeded, but I take pride in knowing that I did my best according to the abilities God gave me.

It is time to turn the reins over to new leadership for a new century.  I have known and worked with Ed Hill for many years.  I have no doubt that he will serve in this office with distinction and write a new, glorious chapter in IBEW history.

Our cause is one of the most noble on earth, and we must never shrink from the fight for justice and dignity for working people.  I I leave you with one thought, let it be a theme that I stressed many times in speeches before IBEW audiences.  Nothing can stop us if we stand united and live up to our ideals of hard work, solidarity and a burning commitment to justice for all working people. Political and economic tides ebb and flow, bringing good and bad times.  But there is nothing we cannot accomplish if we truly dedicate ourselves to our goals and principles.  Your future is in your hands and no one else's.  Hold the torch of the IBEW high as you move forward to new heights.

In his second Epistle to Timothy (who was probably Irish), St Paul wrote: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."  I ask you for no accolade other than that my brothers and sisters in the IBEW believe that of me.

May God bless all of you.
J. J. Barry
