January/February 2001 IBEW Journal

Jeremiah J. O'Connor was sworn in as International Secretary-Treasurer on January 29, 2001, following his appointment by International President Hill and confirmation by the IEC.

Brother O'Connor had served as International Vice President of the Sixth District since his appointment to that post by President Barry on November 1, 1995.  He was elected to the position at the International Convention in 1996.  He had previously served as an International Representative assigned to the Sixth District staff.  In that position, he serviced Construction, Utility, Manufacturing and Radio-TV Broadcasting local unions throughout the Sixth District.  He also was an instructor for Construction and Industrial Organizing, Steward Training and Leadership Training.

Brother O'Connor's long and distinguished career with the IBEW began with his initiation into IBEW Local 701, Wheaton, Illinois, on March 15, 1959.  He served Local 701 as business manager-financial secretary from 1978 until January 1, 1987, when he accepted the appointment as International Representative.  From 1965 to 1978, he was assistant business manager of the local.  While at Local 701, he was active on the Safety, Negotiating, Labor-Management and Political Committees and was an apprentice instructor for 10 years with the DuPage County JATC.  His community activity included work with the Red Cross, the United Way, the Aurora Blood Bank and area Code Enforcement.  He also served as president of the DuPage County Building Trades Council and the DuPage County Federation of Labor's Central Body.

The Brotherhood extends congratulations and best wishes to International Secretary-Treasurer O'Connor as he assumes the duties of his new position.
