New Telecom Web Site Launched

January 11, 2002

Telecommunications branch members who attended the two-day conference on organizing wireless and broadband workers learned about a new tool to help build successful organizing campaigns in this sector - a new Web site dedicated exclusively to this effort.

The site at www.ibew.org/eworkers will be an electronic forum in the campaigns to organize more workers in telecommunications. Complete with information on workers rights, the site shines the light on laws protecting American workers. As a resource for organizing campaigns, the site will directly counter misinformation and scare tactics sometimes peddled by companies during organizing campaigns.

Union members earn higher wages, have better benefits, while enjoying greater job stability and a safer environment and those facts are included in a section of the site titled "Why Unionize?" and illustrated by a convincing pie chart showing the rights gained by workers with a collective bargaining agreement.

The Web site is another tool in the IBEWs reinvigorated effort to capture industry workers, particularly in the wireless and broadband categories.

"No one can organize workers better than other workers," said Tom Hopper of Local 21 in Downers Grove, Illinois.

The site also has valuable links to industry Web sites like the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions and the National Labor Relations Board. It will also have downloadable leaflets to print and pass out.
