March of Dimes Washington D.C. Walk Event Raises Money, Spirits

May 15, 2002

More than 50 IBEW International Office staffers and officers and their families and friends participated in the Washington, D.C. March of Dimes Walkathon May 5.

Longtime IBEW Personnel Director Peter Keenan was honored by event planners for his dedication to the national capitol chapter of the March of Dimes. Keenan, who retired in April after a 31-year career of service to the IBEW, started the race by cutting the ribbon and leading 1,200 walkers down the National Mall.

"Hes been a faithful participant for many years," said March of Dimes National Capital Area Chapter Community Director Nzinga Jones. Last year alone, Keenan raised $8,700 for the charity whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Keenan has been a member of the chapters board of directors for several years.

The weather was perfect for the 6.5-mile walk along the National Mall past such Washington landmarks as the Washington Monument and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The IBEW team, which for years led the field in fundraising for the event, has collected $11,400 so far. Organizers expect to more than double that figure by the end of the month.

IBEW Team Captain Elbert Monroe said the team faced stiff competition from a local bank, which could unseat the IBEW as the events top fundraiser.

"We had spirit galore," Monroe said. "If we dont make Number 1 this year, thats OK because its for the tiniest of babies."
