Local 1600
Signs New Agreement With PPL

June 21, 2002

Ronald Tomasko.

By a three to one margin, Local 1600 members at Pennsylvania Power and Light (PPL) ratified a new four-year labor agreement last week.

"Its a good contract," said Ron Tomasko, president and financial secretary of Local 1600.  "It has a lot of positives."

The agreement, which covers 4,100 workers, includes annual rate increases of approximately 3.5 percent over the life of the contract. It provides for the company to increase pension benefits 20-30 percent and hike its share of matching contributions to employee 401(k) plans. Tomasko said PPL workers are among the few in the Third District who still have a health plan that does not require employee contributions. The contract also extends dental, vision and pharmaceutical coverage.

Members at Local 1600, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, work at nuclear and coal generation plants and provide transmission, distribution and clerical support for PPL, which supplies electricity to 1.3 million homes in businesses in 29 counties in Pennsylvania. Headquartered in Allentown, PPL also delivers electricity to customers in the United Kingdom and Latin America.

The collective bargaining agreement is the result of more than a month of negotiations.
