Dues Change Approved
L.U. 77 (lctt,mt,o,t&u), SEATTLE, WAThis past April, Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. David Timothy and the Executive Board made a recommendation to the membership to amend the Local Union 77 Bylaws, Article X, Section 9, Subsection (a), (b), and NOTE, to increase the current dues formula from 1 percent to 1.25 percent.

The members overwhelming approved this recommendation at the June unit meeting. This increase will be on the gross earnings for our construction members and on basic wages for our utility members. Pending IO approval, it will become effective Oct. 1, 2002.

Earlier this year, we ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with Potelco, which covers the engineers, administrative techs and warehousers. This is a first time contract, with a membership of about 125 brothers and sisters, and may grow to excess of 200. Their new unit number is 135.

Our work picture looks slow. For more information, contact us at 206-323-0585, or visit us on the web at www.ibew77.com.

Remember Those Oversees
L.U. 97 (u), SYRACUSE, NYSeptember brings the first anniversary of what will surely be considered one of the infamous days in the history of the United States and the world. Thousands of IBEW members contributed funds to aid the Sept. 11 victims and their families. Many Local 97 members were called to active duty to defend our great nation, and in some cases to participate in hunting down those responsible.

Bus. Mgr. Thomas Primero, Jr. and staff would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all who gave of themselves to aid the victims and to help preserve our freedom. If you know any of these people, please take a moment to say thank you, or write those overseas on duty.

Dan Wismont, Bus. Rep.

Strong Work Picture
L.U. 103 (cs&i), BOSTON, MACongratulations to the 2002 apprenticeship graduates that included 96 electrical and 53 telecom. Award winners for electrical are Andrew J. Bruno, Michael T. Donahue and Morvin George, and for telecom are Catherine D. Jurczyk and Daniel M. Morley. We wish them the best of luck in their careers. Local 103 has also seen the initiation of 82 electrical and 62 telecom apprentices this year.

Pin Night in June had approximately 1,000 in attendance, and of the 905 eligible members, 314 were in attendance. Bro. John W. Kelly received a 78-year pin. Congratulations to all.

Our Annual Brotherhood Golf Tournament raised $35,000 for the Brotherhood Fund.

Congratulations to the Local 103 Annual Scholarship Program recipients Kathryn Bombardieri, Ryan Cunningham, Michael Manning, and Soibhan McIntyre.

Thanks to the 1,300 traveling members helping us fill all the job requests. The work picture continues to look strong. Project labor agreements have all been signed and work should be starting soon on the five schools in Milton, five in Revere and five in Waltham. The Boston Redevelopment Authority has approved numerous jobs that will be employing an abundant amount of journeymen and technicians in the near future.

Ongoing Organizing
L.U. 111 (em,lctt,mt,o,rtb, spa&u), DENVER, COConsistent with IBEW International policy, Local 111 is working diligently to organize its jurisdiction. But as you might expect, the hardest part is to convince the membership to participate. Regularly scheduled COMET training classes, offered through the hall, have helped address this issue. One of the greatest hurdles we have to overcome is the generation gap between veteran members and newly organized members. Outside Line Organizer Sean McCarville is working cooperatively with contractors to place qualified workers recruited from nonunion competitors.

The first group of linemen from recently organized R. A. Waffensmith Company, a subsidiary of Quanta Services, has completed their Journeymans test. Congratulations to those new IBEW journeyman linemen.

An agreement has been reached between the contractor and the Mountain States Apprenticeship Committee to provide training on an "as needed" basis during the conversion process. This is truly a winwin scenario.

Safety Conference Pole Top Rescue
competition in Seattle.

L.U. 125 (lctt,o&u), PORTLAND, ORThe Klickitat PUD Pole Top Rescue Team captured first place at the 50th Annual Washington Governors Safety Conference in Seattle in September 2001. The team of John Bellamy and Rob Rising beat seven other teams. This is the first time a Klickitat team has won the event.

Pole top rescue competition is intense. Competitors are faced with a unique set of circumstances determined by judges. They have two minutes to assess the situation, plot out a plan of action, tool up and begin the rescue. They are timed, graded and carefully scrutinized on their cardiopulmonary rescue (CPR) and other techniques.

"Nobody gets to see the problem beforehand," said Bellamy. "Fortunately, John and I work together each day on the construction crew, so we communicate well," said Rising.

They intend to defend their title at the 2002 Governors Safety Conference in Spokane.

Work is picking up in our jurisdiction, primarily for maintenance on Pacific Power and Bonneville properties. At this writing, we have 14 journeymen on Book I and 12 on Book II.
