November 2002 IBEW Journal Welcome, New Contractors
L.U. 223 (em,govt&i), BROCKTON, MAAgents/Organizers Ernest Correia and David Fenton have been successful in their organizing efforts. We recently welcomed Standard Communications and Capital Wiring, and look forward to working with all our new members. Thanks to all who volunteered for the annual Fall River Celebrates America. Thanks also to all who participated in the very successful "Sick and Needy Benefit" fund-raiser held August 11 in East Taunton, MA, to benefit members and their families. Members participated from many parts of the country, and the expression of Brotherhood was great. Our work picture is holding its own, and we expect to be quite busy after the first of the year. There is a scheduled shutdown at Pilgrim Station, and Brayton Pt. Power Station has several projects planned that will improve our environment. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. David Amaral, P.S. 100th Anniversary In this election year, we thank all the outgoing and former officers for their commitment and hard work to give us the benefits we enjoy today. Thanks also to their spouses and families. The past has given our incoming officers a proud history and rich tradition to live up to. Do it justice! Congratulations, and good luck. The November meeting has been moved from November 14 to November 21. We hope to see you there! Ray Zychowicz, Pres. Training Classes Work is currently slow. Thanks again to the traveling brothers and sisters who helped us out on the Pine Bluff Arsenal project. We are saddened to report the death of Bro. Justin Evans, a second year apprentice and the son of Bro. Gordon Evans. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. Bobby Thornton, Asst. B.M./Organizer Full-Time Organizer The leadership of this local intends to be proactive. Organizing efforts in existing and emerging industries have significantly increased our membership. Service to all members is a continuous duty of the local. Advances in information technology must be utilized to serve all members properly, and to allow our business representatives and office staff to be as productive as possible. The entire IBEW has been made aware of the importance of organizing to our survival. It would be a great disservice to our members, present and future, to wallow in complacency. To be satisfied, when the short-term work picture looks good, is to be deceived. To maintain a healthy skepticism is wise, but to be mired in negativity and cynicism is arrogant and selfish. Mike Faust, P.S. 85th Anniversary
L.U. 317 (i,o,rts,t&u), HUNTINGTON, WVWork in our area is still going well, but is expected to slow toward the end of the year and remain slow starting next year. Thanks to all the traveling members who have helped us man the abundance of work we have had over the past year. Local 317 celebrated its 85th anniversary on August 13, 2002. We had nearly 40 retirees come to the first August union meeting to help celebrate. Thank you all for helping to make our local what it is today. Lots of stories were told, and a good time was had by all. Dont forget the retirees meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Call Bros. Jack Harris 304-736-7630 or Jerry Booth 304-522-1471 for location of meeting. Our new apprenticeship building is open. Thanks to all who helped, and especially Dale Simmons who put a lot of time into this project. It is with regret that we announce the deaths of L.T. "Dink" James, Herb Jordan, Rick Parker, Bernard Smith, Clyde Workman and Charles Clark. Our condolences to their families and friends. Ted Kinder, P.S.
