(i,mar,mt,o,rts&spa), SAN DIEGO, CALocal 569 kicked off our
Labor 2002 election campaign with a tailgate party before a Padres
game with other union members, labor and elected leaders. Special
thanks to all the members and family members who volunteered during
this important election cycle. Thanks also to the worksite delegates
who arranged worksite meetings and kept their co-workers informed
about our endorsed candidates and issues.
Our electoral efforts translate into legislative
successes that help us to grow. Organizing continues to be our main focus.
We have signed several new inside contractors and continue to meet with
employees and contractors doing all types of electrical work in our
jurisdiction.
With school starting, work has slowed. However, we have
done much organizing to secure work and look forward to continued
employment for our members.
We extend our sympathy to the family of Bro. Marc
Posey. You remain in our hearts and thoughts.

Brotherhood is Alive L.U. 601 (i&rtb), CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, ILCongratulations to Local 649,
Alton, IL, for winning our 26th Annual IBEW Softball
Invitational Tournament. This tournament has always been a great
opportunity to meet members from all over the state. The 15 teams
participating in this years event were Locals 34, Peoria, IL, 117, Elgin,
IL, 134, Chicago, IL, 146, Decatur, IL, 150, Waukegan, IL, 176, Joliet,
IL, 197, Bloomington, IL, 309, Collinsville, IL, 364, Rockford, IL, 461,
Aurora, IL, 538, Danville, IL, 601, Champaign-Urbana, IL, 649, Alton, IL,
701, Lisle, IL, and 725, Terre Haute, IN. Thanks to all the teams for
another great year.
Special thanks to event Chairman Shawn Davis for a job
well done. This years T-shirts paid tribute to Local 3, New York, NY, who
tragically lost members on September 11 at the World Trade Center.
The Champaign County Workers Memorial is completed and
was dedicated on Labor Day, September 2. Thanks to all who helped.
There is some work in the horizon, with Abbott Power
Plant adding on to their facilities, but right now things are a little
slow.

L.U. 606 (em,es,i,rtb,spa&u), ORLANDO, FLThis year at the National
Training Institute held in Knoxville, TN, by the NJATC, we took time away
from a very busy schedule to hike eight miles of the Appalachian Trail.
The weeklong classes are successful in making us all better teachers for
our apprenticeship programs.
Bro. Kevin McNealy sent in this article: "They died so
you can vote. There is a thin line between a government of the people, for
the people and by the people, and a governing body that prohibits the
governed any means to improve their quality of life. That thin line is the
right by free and honest elections to select the persons who govern and
represent the citizens. The right to enact or disallow many social or
economic changes. That thin line is the right to vote. Hundreds of
thousands of armed forces members have died to preserve our government and
our right to vote. The citizens of this country who are eligible to
votebut do notcommit a grave disservice to those who died in wars
defending the United States. Their deaths should not have been in vain."

Starting October 1, 2002, the labs in Los Alamos will
no longer be managed by JCNNM. The new contract was awarded to Kellog
Brown & Root. The transition should go smooth and hopefully it will be
business as usual.
At this writing, the ballots for the latest election
had not been sent, but I will have a list of the winners by the next
article.

L.U. 617 (c,i,o&st), SAN MATEO, CAAs we approach the holiday season,
the Local and its NECA Chapter answered the call when the San Mateo
Parents Nursery School needed electrical work on its facility.
The San Mateo Parents Nursery School is a non-profit
cooperative school owned and operated by its members. Their goal is to
create a loving, supportive and empowering environment for families.
Special thanks to our members and NECA contractor Atlas/Pellizzari for
volunteering to do the work.
Along with many non-profit organizations, Local 617 has
had ties to the school since 1947 when Carol Hardgrove (Joe Fitzgeralds
grandmother and one of the founders) and Dorothy Hills (Ernies deceased
wife) were directors at the school.
As with Christmas in April, Habitat for Humanity and
other non-profit organizations, giving back to the community has always
held an important place in the locals affairs.
