December 2002 IBEW Journal Seahawk Stadium
L.U. 46 (c,em,i,rtb, rts&st), SEATTLE, WAOur members are proud of the new Seahawk Stadium. This new 67,000-seat structure is truly something to see. Located on the site of the old Kingdom, this new sportsmans palace has all the bells and whistles, including Internet capability at each seat and a JUMBO high definition video board that is 84-feet wide by 24-feet high. This project was completed early and under budget!! After a long and hard election that required a second ballot, Local 46 has a host of new representatives for the next three years. Congratulations to new Bus. Mgr. Gary Price, Pres. Brett Olson and Vice Pres. John Fraine. The Executive Board members are Ken Hasling, John Mattson, Steve Murphy, Maggie Romero Schab, Archie Van Valkenburgh and Rick Wheeler. Our members are excited about the ideas and enthusiasm these new brothers and sisters will bring to the local in these challenging times. Our sincere thanks go to the past group of representatives for their dedication, hard work and success over the past three years. Kevin Quinlan, P.S. "Good Guys" Win The leading anti-union activist in Oregon, who has written and sponsored numerous anti-union ballot measures, was sued by two teacher unions. The jury found the activist guilty of racketeering and awarded over $800,000 in damages. The judge can amend the award to treble damages but has not decided at this time. Much money and hard work has been spent by unions in Oregon and Washington on a yearly basis to defeat those measures that attack our standard of living and job security. The verdict will be appealed, but for now the "good guys" have won. Unemployment is still a major concern, with Washington and Oregon ranking number one and two in the nation. With the unrest at Boeing and the Longshoreman lockout on the West Coast, many unions are rallying support for those without a current contract. "United We Stand" is now more important than ever to keep what our predecessors secured for us. Dave Jacobsen, P.S. Congratulations, Retirees
L.U. 60 (i), SAN ANTONIO, TXWork is still slow and it looks as if that will continue. The SBC Center, new home for the San Antonio Spurs, is finishing up, and there are no prospects for any major projects to take up the slack. At this writing, the proposed PGA resort is up in the air and a location for the Toyota plant has not yet been decided. Several cities nationwide continue to be in contention and San Antonio has been reported to be a favorable location. This would be a shot in the arm for our local construction industry. Congratulations to recent retirees George Steubing (29 years), Roy Calderon (39 years), Stanley Zettner (41 years) and Royce Appelt (43 years). Thanks for your longtime service to the electrical industry and your local union. Enjoy your retirement and save a few fish for me. With the retirement of Bro. Roy Calderon, a position on the Executive Board opened up. Bro. Emile Larose stepped forward to finish his term. We congratulate and thank Bro. Calderon for his efforts on behalf of Local 60. Allen A. Vajdos, P.S. Best, Worst Employers
L.U. 66 (o,t&u), HOUSTON, TXAfter a 20-month battle, South Texas Project Nuclear Plant (STP) finally reached an agreement on Aug. 12, 2002. Bros. Fred Naranjo, journeyman substation electrician for Reliant Energy, and Harris County AFL-CIO Pres. Dale Wortham participated in a "Justice Bus Tour" in June, with more than 100 members from the Harris County AFL-CIO. The purpose of the tour is to visit and acknowledge Harris County area employers who value the worth of their employees and present them with a "Justice" certificate, and present "No Justice" certificates to those employers who do not. A short rally was held at each location to present the certificates. Bro. Dale Wortham is dressed as a vampire in the accompanying photo at a "No Justice" rally and "bloody" organizing campaign at the Southeast Texas Regional Blood Center. Bro. Fred Naranjo is a veteran steward, active member of the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus and a member of the Galveston County Central Labor Council. We thank these brothers for their commitment and dedication to Local 66. Happy Holidays to all. Greg Lucero, B.M. On Strike This strike is taking its toll on everybody. We have dedicated members acting as picket captains who have been faithfully on the line every day since July 1. They are tired, frustrated at times, but are determined to stay until it is over. With the weather getting colder, the captains have set up tents to stay warm, giving the pickets better conditions than the scabs have on the job. To all of them, thank you. As for Ludvik, he lost the majority of his work force the first day of the strike. Since then his first round of scabs have either been fired or quit. So that means he is in the process of replacing his work force for the third time in as many months. Apparently he cant find the quality workers he had when he was hiring out of the hall. I can only hope that we wont be singing Christmas carols to the scabs. Wishing all of you Happy Holidays and solidarity! Daniel J. Curtin, Pres.
