L.U. 1499 (em&ptc), CHELSEA, MAMembers, as well as Second Dist. Int. Rep. John Faria, participated in the fourth-annual Walk to Cure Cancer.

We had a great turnout, despite the rainy weather. The Walk to Cure Cancer funds research and equipment for UMASS Medical School. So many of us, as well as family members and friends, suffer from this deadly disease. The five-mile walk to cure cancer gives us hope to someday find a cure. Special thanks to all who participated in the Walk to Cure Cancer.

L.U. 1501 (ees,em,mo,pet&rts), BALTIMORE, MDAgainst all odds, and with no endorsement except the AFL-CIO, Pres./Bus. Mgr. Dion F. Guthrie defeated a 12-year Republican incumbent for a seat on the Harford County Council by 65 votes after 10,000 votes were cast.

Congratulations to Bro. Guthrie on his historic win. We know Harford County and the state of Maryland will benefit from his efforts.

This remarkable win in Harford County was a result of a good grassroots campaign ably assisted by a large group of volunteers. Having resided in the county for 36 years, Bro. Guthrie was unhappy with the many unresolved problems plaguing his community and decided to do something about it.

His Democratic candidacy withstood the Republican landslide and he was elected to the Harford County Council representing District "A." It was not an easy fight, first winning the Democratic Primary against two other office seekers by a commanding vote of 65 percent, and on to the General Election on November 5. It was an expensive undertaking, and Bus. Mgr. Guthrie appreciated the money provided by COPE, local labor bodies and the contributions from residents.

Tom Jones Mourned

Gen. Mgr. Jack Kriesel.

L.U. 1545 (mo), JESUP, GABro. Tom L. Jones, one of our 2002 retires, passed away mid-summer. Bro. Jones held membership with the IBEW for a total of 41-1/2 years, and was a member of Local 1545 for 23-1/2 years.

Tom was always a major player in our shop Christmas party, and his help and presence will be greatly missed. It was decided at a recent planning meeting that the 2002 Christmas party would be put together in his memory, with a lot of singing and laughter, just as Tom would have done himself.

Our condolences to his wife, Freda, sons, Danny Jones and David Jones, and family.

L.U. 1547 (c,em,i,o,t&u), ANCHORAGE, AKLocal 1547 lent its skills to a patriotic project at the Palmer Pioneers and Veterans Home in July. Seniors at the home now have illuminated flagpoles, thanks to home resident Ed Lynch and Local 1547.

Mr. Lynch, a World War II veteran, acted on a request from several residents of the home to have lights installed so that proper flag protocol could be maintained. He called Local 1547, which promptly agreed to install the lights free of charge, with help from local businesses that donated equipment and supplies.

Mr. Lynch and residents of the home are especially proud to display the American flag since many are veterans, and are grateful to Local 1547 for doing this project in the name of patriotism and community involvement. Special thanks to all who volunteered.

L.U. 1701 (catv, ees,i,o&u), OWENSBORO, KYHappy New Year to all. At this writing, work has picked up in our jurisdiction. Dynalectric has been awarded several projects in the Owensboro-Henderson area, PMC Construction has the maintenance contract and Galloway Electric has projects at the Western Kentucky Energy (WKE) D.B. Wilson Power Plant in Ohio County, KY. Both contractors are working about 50 of our members, and are taking work from nonunion contractors.

The WKE Coleman Plant in Hawesville, KY, was expected to award contracts in December 2002. Industrial Contractors is already on the site and hoping to land these contracts.

Our local union picnic was held in September at Golfland USA in Owensboro, and we had a great retiree turnout. Thanks to the Entertainment Committee and all the volunteers for their time and effort.

The Examining Board gave the journeyman wireman test to intermediate journeyman Richie Sampson and reports he passed. Good luck in the future, Bro. Sampson.

Our JATC has been holding journeyman upgrade and OSHA 10 classes, and we will be having more throughout the year. Contact the hall for more information.
