Welcome, New Contractors

Some of the Local 193, Springfield, IL,
members and families who built a Labor Day
parade float in memory of members lost on
September 11 are, from left, Matt Peterson,
Sara Peterson, Amanda Starkweather, Todd
Starkweather and Austin Peterson.

L.U. 193 (i,lctt,o,rts, spa&u), SPRINGFIELD, ILIt has been a busy couple of months, with elections, a successful fundraiser, the addition of some new members and the loss of a few more.

We are pleased to welcome two new signatory contractors into our area. They are Alpha Electric and Capital Sound and Light. We welcome them and their employees into our family.

The Rick Ross Memorial Golf Outing had 92 golfers participating in September, with more than $300 raised for the HELP Fund.

The efforts of the PAC Committee should not go unrecognized. They worked diligently, not only on campaigns and voter registration, but also attended numerous fundraisers for worker friendly candidates.

We are saddened to report the deaths of three members. Bro. Scott Carpenter, a third-year inside apprentice, was killed in a car accident in September. We also lost Bros. Bill Barr (journeyman lineman) and Dick Ridings (journeyman wireman). Our condolences and prayers go to their families and friends.

Rick Shereda, P.S.

Linemen Needed
L.U. 196
(govt,mt,o,t&u), ROCKFORD, ILAt this writing, our outside overhead distribution and URD work is going very well. We could use some journeyman linemen. If anyone is interested give us a call at 847-888-1960.

The telephone work is slow, and we have small jobs in the city of Geneva putting in fiber optics. We are still having problems with the operating engineers and laborers trying to claim our equipment operation in our sub-stations and peaking units. The laborers are trying to claim the URD work. This has become an every day fight, and we cannot figure out why these so called unions wont go after the nonunion employees and contractors rather than our work. We have heard there are IBEW locals who actually have let IUOE and LIUNA do their URD work. If this is true it needs to stop. We need to keep all our IBEW work "All IBEW." If some locals let this happen, it will bleed over into other locals who have always done this work with only IBEW members. We would like to urge any IBEW Locals who let this happen to change your ways.

15 Percent Growth

Local 223, Brockton, MA, Bus. Mgr. Timothy Cayton, kneeling
left, and Organizer David Fenton, kneeling right, with newly
organized members of Bayside Electrical Contractors.

L.U. 223 (em,govt&i), BROCKTON, MABayside Electrical Contractors signed an agreement with Local 223 on Sept 16, 2002, with 24 members, including apprentices. Our Organizers have been doing a great job increasing our membership approximately 15 percent in two years.

Local 223 held a steward training class on Nov. 6, 2002. The instructors were Int. Reps. Brian Maher and Richard Panagrossi. Fifteen members attended, along with Bus. Mgr. Timothy Cayton, Organizers Earnest Corriea and David Fenton and Pres. Robert Revil.

Our work picture has slowed slightly, but we expect it to pick up after the first of the year.

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.

David Amaral, P.S.

Great Organizing Year

Local 236, Albany, NY, winning foursome
and new champs are, from left Steve
Bomberger, Bob Thomas, Chip Greenberg
and Bill McDaniel.

L.U. 236 (catv, ees, govt,i,mo,rtb &t), ALBANY, NYThe 2002 annual golf outing was a big success, with 18 foursomes turning out for a great day of golf. Chairman Phil Pacifico thanks everyone for their support and participation and offers a special thanks to Paul Toth and Dean Garafalo for running the skins game. The 2002 first place foursome carded a 12-under 59, followed closely by the Gary Kennedy and Mark McGary foursomes, who tied for second with a pair of 10-under 61s. Longest drives were Kyle Gregoire and Jason Cooper and closest to the pin were Greg Walsh and John Lea.

2002 was again a stellar year for our organizing campaign, and a large number of former nonunion journeymen and apprentices are now enjoying the fruits of a union way of life. We hope our organizing efforts will be even more successful this year.

Michael V. Doyle, P.S.
