January/February 2003 IBEW Journal Agreements Reached A few electrical companies have been on site at ISG. ISG has been producing a lot of steel. If production demands remain steady or increases, we could see more members working on site in the near future. Some of our best work opportunities have been at our local hospitals. Lake Erie Electric has the Metro Hospital expansion. Doan/Pyramid has the new Cleveland Clinic Hotel and various projects there. Atlas Electric and Harrington Electric are doing the new University Hospital Medical Research Building. The next major project will be the Legacy Village Shopping Center. This $145 million project is being financed by the National Electrical Benefit Fund. The involvement of the NEBF pension plan guarantees this project is built 100 percent union. Welcome new contractors Precision Environmental Co. and K.A. Electric. Dennis Meaney, Organizer
L.U. 40 (em,i&mps), HOLLYWOOD, CAThe Local 40 Annual Family Picnic was held this past summer and was the biggest ever, with 250 members, along with their families, who showed up to have a good time. What made it even more exciting was the fact that it was held at Raging Waters in San Dimas, CA. This premier water park was a perfect setting for sun, fun and a celebration of the Brotherhood. The members enjoyed some of the finest fixins, with a giant barbeque to satisfy even the heartiest linemens appetite. Children and parents also participated in many games and contests ranging from basketball, a gunny sac race, to a water balloon toss. What picnic would be complete without prizes such as DVD players, movies and music? The highlight of the day was getting wet! This park sports many of the tallest and wildest water slides in the country. The members would especially like to thank our office manager, Bessie Capili, and the many volunteers for their tireless work in coordinating this terrific event. Michael CourtoIs, P.S.
L.U. 41 (em,es,i,se&spa), BUFFALO, NYThe officers and Local 41 members extend best wishes and the hope that in 2003 there will be peace and prosperity for our nation and our Brotherhood. At this writing in October, the longest serving Local 41 officer is days away from retiring. Bro. Pete Rice will officially retire on Nov. 1, 2002, after a career spanning 37 years as a member of Local 41. Pete served on the Executive Board for 27 years, the past nine as its chairman. We thank Pete for his years of service to our Brotherhood and wish him and his wife, Diane, many years of happy retirement. Work has continued to slow down for the Local 41 construction division as winter settles in. We are thankful to those locals that have been able to help our unemployed. We are currently negotiating contracts at the Buffalo News, Town of Evans and Niagara Transformer Corp. We hope to have finalized and ratified these contracts by the time this article appears in the Journal. James A. Voye, B.M./F.S. Margin of Victory We recently concluded negotiations with the Colton Utility Unit. The agreement gives an average 6 percent increase the first year and COLA increases in years two and three. The retirement formula improved by 35 percent. The Banning General and Utility Units had contract re-openers, and the retirement formula improved by 25 percent. Wage re-opener negotiations are currently underway with Southern California Edison. Negotiations have started for several individual classifications, including substation electricians and linemen-type classifications. Local 47 members from SCE, and for the first time teams from Riverside, competed at the Linemans Rodeo in Kansas City. Another surprise participant was our Local 47 Bus. Mgr. and Seventh Dist. IEC Member Pat Lavin, who competed along with Bus. Mgr. Ron Jones of L.U. 659, Medford, OR, and Local 659 retiree John Green. They did not come in last. We are sad to report the passing of Bros. Ed Pryor, Peb Jung and Andy Ambrus. Stan Stosel, P.S. A Brother as Commissioner October saw Bro. John Wilson leave his Executive Board position and assume the vice president position vacated by Bro. Gardner. Bro. Greg Nordin filled the Executive Board position, and both were sworn in at the October general meeting. Once again Local 48 supplied more than 40 volunteers, journeyman wiremen and apprentices to help prepare the Grotto for the Annual Festival of Lights. The Grotto is a nationally famous place of worship and retreat located in Portland, OR. The lighting display contained more than 250,000 individual lights. Local 48 has helped out every year since 1988 when Bro. Ken Fry organized the first volunteers. Dave Jacobsen, P.S.
