January/February 2003 IBEW Journal Election Results Congratulations to the class of 2002 inside wireman graduates. They are Pete Ames, Becky Deno, Kevin Hagelgans, Steve Morgan, John Reed, Dennis Smith and Shannon Thayer. Yole Velo, P.S. Busy Work Situation Congratulations to Alfonzo Ramos, Lance Durtschi and Terri Spiers, who finished their apprenticeship and advanced to journeyman wiremen. Congratulations also to Larry Wharton, Keith Bush, Jason Hall and Ryan Degn, who passed the Local 449 exam. With the work situation as it is, we are being inundated with phone calls. If you have tried to call recently and cant get through or have gotten the recorder, we apologize for the inconvenience. We are still trying to get our insurance situation improved and appreciate the input we have received at the monthly meetings. Though it seems we may not see any real progress in the near future, as far as merging plans or having a national plan, I think we can still help each other by sharing ideas and successes as we work to find answers for the future. I was encouraged to see the attention this is getting nationwide and look forward to seeing us resolve the issues together. Ned Jones, Pres. Expanding Our Hall Our annual Childrens Christmas Party was fun, with plenty of food and refreshments. Thanks to our Christmas Party Committee and all our volunteers who do a wonderful job. A special thank you to Santa and all of his helpers. The members annual Christmas Beefsteak Dinner was a great night for retired, active and future journeymen to reminisce, talk shop, or just catch up with local brothers and sisters while enjoying a great meal. The grand finale was our Adult Christmas Party, where everyone looked their best, along with their spouses. The committee outdid themselves once again, and we thank them. The new addition to the union hall is coming along nicely. We are in great need of the new space and are all looking forward to its completion. We remember the following deceased members: Henry Kettle, John Mahn, Sr., Anthony Morales and Fred Runyan, Jr. Our condolences to their families and friends. Cathy Gallagher, P.S. A Great Union I want to tell you what the IBEW means to me personally. I feel blessed in every way. I am thankful to have been elected business manager by my peers, elected Pennsylvania AFL-CIO vice president and also recently elected State Electrical Workers Association president. I will continue to work hard for our members, and thank you all for your continued support. I also want to thank our International Officers, representatives and staff for their leadership. The next time you think you are not blessed, think about who is watching over you and your families. We are all blessed to be a part of this great union. Joe Sanna, B.M./F.S.
L.U. 503 (t&u), MONROE, NYNegotiations began with Warwick Telephone Company on November 7 and at this writing are in progress. Thank you for filling out the contract surveys. Negotiations with Mirant will begin April 2003. Contract surveys are forthcoming. The local would like to thank the membership for, as usual, going above and beyond with your generosity toward the Holiday Food Basket Drive and the Marines Toys-for-Tots Campaign. We will again be feeding another 70 families in the area who are in need of assistance, and supplying a less fortunate child with a much appreciated holiday gift. Congratulations to Bro. Terry Holt, who received the IBEW International Life Saving Award for his act of heroism in Nyack, NY. Terry acted quickly, safely and responsibly during his response to a gas emergency caused by a vehicle accident, saving many lives and businesses in the area. Great job, Terry! Happy New Year to all. Mary M. Casey, P.S.
