Punt, Pass & Kick

Local 90, New Haven, CT, volunteers at the Greater
New Haven Punt, Pass & Kick Youth Football
Program event.

L.U. 90 (i), NEW HAVEN, CTOur current work picture is slow, as is the entire state of Connecticut. In the meantime, we will continue to work through our LMCC, along with local contractors, to find ways to create new jobs for our members. Organizing will also continue. We have already experienced many benefits of a strong organizing campaign.

On Sept. 28, 2002, Local 90 sponsored the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick Youth Football Program for the fifth consecutive year. We had a great day, with 87 children participating and receiving awards. Its very rewarding to see the smiles on the childrens faces and to see them compete.

Special thanks to event coordinators Peter Reilly and Joe Rizzo and to all the volunteers who made this event a great success.

Our continued commitment to our community in events such as Habitat for Humanity, the Punt, Pass and Kick Program, Fantasy of Lights and the many other community events show that the members of Local 90 are truly a "union of hearts and minds."

Ongoing Negotiations
L.U. 97
(u), SYRACUSE, NYAs a result of deregulation, sales, mergers and organizing, Local 97 now represents members working for the following employers: Constellation Nuclear, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station LLC; Entergy Nuclear Northeast, Entergy Nuclear Operations Inc., James A. Fitzpatrick Station; New York Independent System Operators, Inc.; Niagara MohawkA National Grid Co.; NRG Energy Inc.; Public Service Electric and Gas, Albany Steam Station; Reliant Energy; Service Employees International Union, Local 200B; St. Lawrence Gas Company, Inc. and the Town of Worcester Highway Department. Negotiating ten contracts for members working for the employers listed above has kept Bus. Mgr. Thomas Primero, officers, staff and members very busy. Contract negotiations for St. Lawrence Gas should begin sometime in January.

NRG employs approximately 271 Local 97 members between Huntley, Dunkirk and Oswego. The Huntley and Dunkirk plants are currently working on modifications that will allow the use of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal. The use of PRB coal will help meet the NOX and SOX emission goals. It is also a cheaper fuel that will improve efficiency and allow for greater versatility in the types of coal that the plant can use. Huntley is presently burning a blend of coals while modifications continue. Dunkirk anticipates burning the PRB coal starting sometime in November.

New Organizer
L.U. 99
(govt&i), PROVIDENCE, RIThe word of the day is Organize! After a careful review of interested members, Bro. John Shalvey has been selected to be the locals new organizer, a position of paramount importance to our very being. It is our sincere hope that all members will help John in his every effort. This is a continuing and ever-changing pursuit, and every fresh new idea can only help the cause.

The Local 99 Power Classic annual dinner dance was another wonderful time. Many thanks to Bro. Mike DAmico and the Dinner Dance Committee for all of their hard work.

The face of construction is constantly changing and Local 99 is changing with it. We are now and will always remain on the cutting edge of technology and innovation. However, the one thing we never change is our total commitment to the core principles of the IBEW, our support of our brothers and sisters and the absolute belief in complete solidarity in our local.

Work Remains Strong
L.U. 103
(cs&i), BOSTON, MAOn Nov. 5, 2002, all workers in Massachusetts had a huge set back with the defeat of labors candidate for governor, Shannon OBrien. Republican and anti-worker candidate, Mitt Romney, was unfortunately victorious over Shannon, by a narrow margin. A special thank you to Pres. John Dumas and all the apprentices and journeymen who worked so hard on the campaign.

Local 103 had some political news closer to home in the same week, with Bus. Mgr. Rich Gambino accepting the job of assistant administrator of the trust funds. The Executive Board unanimously voted to replace Bro. Gambino with Bus. Agent Mike Monahan as business manager. Mike, a fourth generation officer, follows a line of family members as manager of our great local union. Mikes father, Richard, and grandfather, Walter, have both held the position of Local 103 business manager. Mike will have some big shoes to fill, as we all know the contributions Rich has made and we are forever grateful.

On Sept. 14, 2002, we held our Annual Retirement Dinner. As usual, we had a large turnout with the retirees, their spouses, families and friends. This year 136 members retired and received their appreciation gifts.

Work remains strong in spite of the economy. We would like to thank the 1,800 travelers for helping us man our jurisdiction.
