District Progress Meeting and Womens
Conference.

L.U. 949 (t&u), BURNSVILLE, MN Local 949 members Wendy Apitz, unit chair of Dakota Electrics Clerical Unit, and Sandra Coronado, steward at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, attended the 2002 IBEW Sixth District Progress Meeting and Womens Conference along with Bus. Mgr. Vince Guertin. They found the conference very informativea great source of information about the IBEW and what other locals are facing in todays economic climate. Wendy and Sandi had the opportunity to meet Int. Pres. Edwin W. Hill, Int. Sec.-Treas. Jerry J. OConnor and Int. Vice Pres. Lawrence P. Curley.

On Oct. 2, Bus. Rep. Ray Turner participated in the annual United Way fund-raiser held at Dakota Electric Association in Farmington, MN. Employees and management alike participate in a "Pie-In-The-Face" contest. Photos of the "candidates" are displayed on jars around the office, and votes are cast by putting money in the appropriate jar. This years "winners" were Ray and Dakota Electric Pres./CEO Greg Miller. This years event exceeded the committees goal of $300. Local 949 thanks all participants and contributors to this worthwhile cause.

Bracing for the Future
L.U. 995
(i,o,rts&spa), BATON ROUGE, LAWe did not do well at the national level in the 2002 election. With a Republican president, Senate and Congress, we can expect to see "paycheck protection" and "comp time" resurface along with Republican changes to prevailing wage. Also expect another raid on Social Security benefits to benefit the rich. Whom do we have to blame? The ultra rich depend on us to be in a deer stand on Election Day, and they have a way of using certain misnomers to convince some of our members to vote with them.

Work is falling off in our jurisdiction. Our signatory contractors are bidding the few jobs on the market. Many members have been laid off. A few jobs may start by February, and Stone & Webster Shaw might be hiring a few people for the mid-year outage at River Bend Nuclear Station. We are organizing wherever nonunion jobs still exist. If you are interested in salting, please contact the hall.

Journeyman classes in applied codeology, voice-data-video, welding, process control and instrumentation (Level I) are underway. We hope our new motor operated valve program will kick off in time for the outages scheduled at area Entergy nuclear stations. Contact Mike Clary at the hall for information on courses. The NJATC/National Training Institute is scheduled for Aug. 9-16 in Knoxville, TN. Contact the JATC office for information.

Agreement Ratified
L.U. 1007
(t&u), EDMONTON, AB, CANADAIn September 2002, the locals EPCOR unit ratified a two-year four/four percent Collective Agreement after a long 10-month negotiating period. Thanks to Negotiating Committee members Jerry Larson, Bud Love, Paul McKnight, Dave Smegal, Norm Spitzer, Dale Southwood and Ron Tithecott.

Congratulations to Pres. Ron Tithecott and Bus. Mgr. Jerry Larson on receiving their 35- and 30-year service pins, respectively at the locals EPCOR unit meeting in October. The local also mailed a 40-year pin to Bro. Dave Zenchyson, who was unable to attend the meeting.

The local was successful in the organizing seven members of the Water Operations in Strathmore, Alberta, and has been issued a certificate from the Alberta Labour Board.

The local is currently entering into contract negotiations with its Civic Unit, and the committee will include Bros. Blaine Thomson, Pat Elliott, Jerry Larson and Dale Southwood.

New Journeymen
L.U. 1116
(em,lctt&u), TUCSON, AZHappy New Year IBEW members! We hope that by the time you read this, our TEP and Trico members will be working under new labor agreements. The members appreciate all the hard work the Negotiating Committee did for us during negotiations.

Congratulations to Bros. Dustin Christmas, Sean Philips, Scott Tutalo and Bob Even, who completed their apprenticeship programs at the Ken Saville Training Center and earned their Journeyman status. All four put in many hours of classroom study and on-the-job training. Bros. Christmas and Even were also recipients of the 2002 Outstanding Apprentice awards.

Our October annual picnic was great, and the rain didnt get us. Bro. Randy Crider, from Springerville, won the 27" color television. Thanks to Bro. Curtis Brooks and Sister Kara Carl, who organized this fun event on their personal time.

Thanks also to Sister Liza Castillo, who worked all year to enlighten union members to get out and vote during the Arizona and city elections. Your vote does make a difference.

We look forward to this New Year 2003 and all the great things that lay in store for us all. Best wishes to all.

R.C. Cavaletto, P.S.
