March 2003 IBEW Journal L.U. 2249 (em), BLOOMINGTON, INThe Clothe-A-Child Committee and volunteers assisted 88 children from the local area in shopping at Kmart in Bedford, IN, including 24 children from families of displaced GE employees. Thanks to an unexpected last minute donation of $1,000 from the American Legion, we were able to assist every child whose name was turned in for our program this year! The GE refrigerator that the company donated for our raffle generated $875. Each child was assisted in spending $100 toward clothing and $25 for a toy of their choice. The children also visited with Santa, and all received a gift bag that included candy, a small toy, stickers, a play pass from Magic Planet and a coupon for a $1.99 meal at Long John Silvers. We sincerely thank everyone who participated and truly made a difference in the lives of these children.
L.U. 2327 (t), AUGUSTA, MEOur November Legislative Day in the Hall of Flags at the State House included a press conference with Vice Pres. J. R. Gibson, Bus. Mgr. Peter McLaughlin and Maine AFL-CIO Pres. Ed Gorham speaking in support of legislative help in fighting the needless force reduction proposed by corporate giant Verizon Communications. We met with several legislators in the office of the Speaker of the House and were able to voice our concerns about the labor issues facing the employees of Verizon and other labor issues concerning all workers in the state of Maine. Later that day several of our members attended a labor rally at Wal-Mart in Scarborough, ME, organized by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW). We were there in support of fair wages, benefits and safe working conditions for the employees of Wal-Mart. The rally went very well despite managements threat of arrest if we approached the Wal-Mart store. UFCW Bus. Mgr. Dennis Norton emphasized that the goal was not to boycott Wal-Mart, but to help employees understand their rights to unionize. J. R. Gibson, V.P.
