April 2003 IBEW Journal
L.U. 102 (c,catv,i,it,o&t), PATERSON, NJ Bus. Mgr. Pat Delle Cava announced his retirement at the January union meeting. Bro. Delle Cava began his IBEW career as an apprentice in 1956, and has been 100 percent dedicated to the betterment of Local 102 and the IBEW ever since. Since taking over as business manager in 1997, Pat has continued Local 102s tradition of excellence in membership education, quality craftsmanship on the jobsites, worker safety and the social awareness of our local as a valued member of our community. Under Pats guidance Local 102 has emerged as a leader in organizing. Pat and the Organizing Committee established a one-territory, one-rate policy, therefore bringing all of the amalgamated locals up to the contract standards of Local 102. Upon his retirement Pat recommended Bro. Lou Baram to succeed him. Bus. Mgr. Lou Baram was sworn in by the Executive Board on Jan. 21, 2003. Lou has been a Local 102 member for 29 years. He will do a fine job continuing the traditions set before him, as well as moving our local forward in the future. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavor. On behalf of the membership, I would like to congratulate Pat and wish him continued health and happiness in his retirement. Joe Nitti, P.S. L.U. 108 (ees,em,es,lctt, mar,mt, rtb, rts,s,spa,t&u), TAMPA, FL Our local is going to have a busy year. TSSI (Unit 3) is preparing proposals for upcoming negotiations. Bro. Troy Trice is Chairperson. The Proposal Committee for JCI (Unit 8) is working in preparation for negotiations this year. Bro. Gary Fold is chairperson and Steve Marsh is vice chairperson. Ruan (Unit 9) negotiations are in their second month at this writing. The Negotiations Committee consists of Ed Faucher (chairperson), Joe Hatfield (vice chairperson), Gary Jenkins and Doug Quick. White Mop Wringer/Pullman Hoult Corporation has sold its plastic division. We have been notified that approximately 60 jobs will be lost. Tampa Electrics new Bayside Power Station may start up earlier than planned. A workforce transition to Big Bend will begin after the Bayside Station start-up. The new power station will burn natural gas, and this and improved technology facilitates an approximate 80 percent reduction in the workforce required at this station. Retired Lineman/Troubleman Bro. Richard Adams has passed away. Our condolences go out to his family. PRECO (Unit 17) employees participated in a linemans rodeo on February 1st. Congratulations to PRECO apprentice lineman Todd Campana, who placed third in his event. Doug Bowden, P.S.
L.U. 110 (em,i,rts, spa&u), ST. PAUL, MN Greetings, at this writing, the outside temperature is minus-15 degrees and spring seems far away. We are really feeling the effects of a slow economy. We congratulate and thank all for their years of service. We also thank the many members who gave of their time to hang the holiday lights in Cannon Falls on a cold, windy Saturday in November, and all those who wired the Habitat for Humanity House in Northfield. Steve White, P.S. L.U. 120 (c,i&o), LONDON, ON, CANADA Local 120 had a full and rewarding year of events for its membership in 2002. London hosted the O.P.C. Hockey Tournament in April, with teams from across Ontario and the U.S. (New York/Michigan). The winners were (from Div. A-D), Ottawa, London, Hamilton, and New York. It was a great time for all, and we thank everyone who volunteered their valuable time to this event, especially Bros. John Gibson, Steve Carty and Peter Thompson. In July, a Retirees Luncheon was well attended and much appreciated by our retired brothers as they enjoyed reminiscing about past projects and seeing old friends. September saw our Annual Golf Tournament, which (with help from some of our contractors) raised money for the Childrens Hospital/Cancer Unit. A BBQ dinner and prizes followed with everyone leaving a winner. The kids had fun again at their Christmas party with games, swimming, presents and goodies. Thank you to Sister Cathy Ash and Bro. Guy Desjardins for your time and help. Finally, a special thank you to our secretary, Judy Vitek, who is an important part of our team and always eager to lend a hand organizing these events. Our hats are off to you. Ian McCool, P.S. L.U. 124 (ees,em,i,mar, rts,se& spa), KANSAS CITY, MO The work situation in our jurisdiction has been slow. However, General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, KS, has begun the long-awaited model change over. The Pontiac Grand Prix assembly is being moved to Canada and the Chevrolet Malibu will be assembled here. This work has started to clear Book I of over 300 journeymen for at least eight weeks of overtime. Missouri IBEW locals and NECA contractors have approved the Missouri statewide Voice-Data-Video Agreement. This field has been untapped and is already beginning to show promise in organizing efforts. Our new training center is open, and we are offering credit classes toward an associates college degree to journeymen and apprentices. Take a few silent moments to honor the men and women serving our nation. Please pray for peace and a speedy return of these patriots to their homes and loved ones. We remember the following deceased members: Charles Crosthwait, Sam Curtis, Myrtus Lindley, Robert Lizar, George Mapes, Glenn "Mike" Mallott, Wayne Mikijanis, Ophie Parks and Edward Van Camp. Congratulations to the following retired members: Garry Brashear, Eugene Crist, Louis Dickmann, James Howard, Roy Jackson, Jack Loewenstein, Charles Vanderwerf, Sr. and Norman Williamson. Frank Mathews, Jr., P.S.
