L.U. 130 (i&o), NEW ORLEANS, LA Democratic Senator Mary Landrieus re-election in a December runoff election against Republican Susan Haik Terrell is a huge victory for working families and organized labor in Louisiana. The eyes of the nation were on Louisiana for weeks prior to the runoff as the National Republican Party spent millions trying to unseat our Democratic voice in the U.S. Senate. A parade of prominent Republicans, including the President and Mrs. Bush, former President Bush, Vice President Cheney and others, came here to endorse their candidate. Critical to Senator Landrieus success was the support of the IBEW and the AFL-CIO. A strong organized labor coalition included the Louisiana AFL-CIO, Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO and all of the IBEW locals in Louisiana. As our labor-endorsed candidate, she received help from hundreds of volunteers who worked phone banks, went door to door and put up signs. A rally was held at Local 130 on election day. Senator Landrieu energized the volunteers in attendance with her enthusiasm and confidence. Thanks to all our brothers and sisters for their help with this victory! Thomas Hughes, P.S.
L.U. 158 (i,mar&spa), GREEN BAY, WI Through a united effort our state has regained the Democratic seats for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General. For 16 years Wisconsin has been under a Republican governor, but no more. We welcome Gov. Jim Doyle, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton and Attorney Gen. Peg Lautenschlager. We will work together to improve our working familys way of life. A huge thank you to all the Local 158 PAC Committee members for seeing the urgent need to step forward and become involved in politics. We are also active in local politics, which governs our local day-to-day life. Special thanks to all our members who volunteer to improve our community, including Habitat for Humanity, New Zoo Project and volunteer firemen, just to name a few. This is just one more way to show others what the Brotherhood stands for. James Neuens, B.M./F.S. L.U. 160 (lctt,o&u), MINNEAPOLIS, MN Local 160 recently organized the radiation and protection/chemical workers at the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant; the business process specialists at the Sherco Generating Plant; the city workers of Luverne, MN; and the city workers of East Grand Forks, MN. L.U. 164 (c,i,o&t), JERSEY CITY, NJ Local 164 recently presented Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ, with a $40,000 donation earmarked for cancer support programs and services. In the past four years, Local 164 has raised more than $100,000 on behalf of its "Project Grandma" breast cancer campaign. "Project Grandma" was named to honor breast cancer survivors, many of whom expressed their desire to overcome the disease and live to see their childrens children. Funds raised by Local 164 support Holy Name Hospitals Stella C. Van Houten Womens Outpatient Center, which provides a full range of support groups for those diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones and children. "Our members are extremely proud to surpass last years total by $10,000," said John Nordyk, who serves along with Barry Hammond as co-chairmen of the event. "Each of us is dedicated to this program, which is not only increasing awareness of the importance of early detection, but honoring breast cancer survivors and those who are battling the disease," said Bus. Mgr. Richard Dressel." "It is our mission to give back to the community and "Project Grandma" is one of Local 164s great successes." David Milazzo, Pres. L.U. 176 (es,i,rts&spa), JOLIET, IL Bro. Louis Piskur is retiring after 47 years of dedicated service to the IBEW and Local 176. Bro. Piskur was initiated into the local on May 14, 1959, and along with working in the field as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman and superintendent, he taught apprenticeship training for more than 30 years. In 1990, Lou became the full-time JATC training director. We saw many great changes during Lous tenure as director. The apprenticeship has grown from just over 100 students to over 400 currently. The day school Lou implemented is proving to be a great success. He was very proud to have worked with the Illinois Valley Community College and Joliet Community College (JJC) to establish an associates degree in Electrical Construction Technology for those who complete the five-year apprenticeship program. Bro. Piskur also donated countless hours of hard work and dedication to many organizations within the local and surrounding areas. We wish Lou and his wife, Diane, a well-deserved retirement, and thank him for his leadership. Paul Ewing, P.S.
