L.U. 1426 (i,o,rtb, spa&u), GRAND FORKS, ND The local sadly reports the passing of retired members Leonard Yanish and Doug Supler in December 2002. Leonard was an inside wireman who retired in 1995, and Doug worked in the gas department for Northern States Power (Xcell Energy), and retired in 2000. The local participated in the first annual Lions Club Christmas in the Park in Grand Forks. We had a nice display for the first year and would like to thank Steve Walsh, Rich Sheppard, Joel Heiden, Jason Suckut and Jason Rasmussen for all their help. Also in December, Local 1426 had its annual Building Corporation Meeting where years of service pins from 25 to 60 years were presented to our active and retired members. Our work picture looks promising, but with most bids on the Moorhead Schools and other projects not due until February, its still too early to tell. Remember, "The union is only as strong as the weakest member." Scott Sansburn, Organizer L.U. 1430 (c,ees&em), NEW YORK, NY We welcome to the Brotherhood 30 new members from Snapple in our recently concluded new agreement. Congratulations to Bro. Joe Morvillo, who was selected by the drivers as their new shop steward. The warehouse will soon select a shop steward. We recently concluded new agreements with two companies, New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and Nexans Energy, USA. Bruce Campbell, chief shop steward from Nexans Energy, USA, said, "It was tough negotiations, but we worked things out considering the current economy, and ratified a contract that we were able to live with." Negotiations with Engelhard Corporation will begin in the next few months. "The negotiations will be intense," said Chief Shop Steward Joe Denera, "but I dont believe we will face the nastiness from the company we had to deal with three years ago. We have a solid group of stewards and strong union leadership." A settlement agreement was reached on a pending arbitration with Technical Operations. The company agreed to the unions demands by paying the members all the sick and vacation time owed them per contract stipulation. Jeff Tomlins, V.P.
L.U. 1744 (mo&u), FORT FRANCES, ON, CANADA Local 1744 is located in Fort Frances, Ontario, a community with a population of 9,000 people. Forestry and tourism are the main industries. Local 1744 has a maintenance and operation (paper mill) and utility charter, with a membership of inside wiremen, powerhouse operators, electrical helpers and power linemen with the Fort Frances Power Corporation. Our local held its annual Christmas Social and the sixth-annual Memorial Pool Tournament on Dec. 13, 2002. The pool tournament is held in remembrance of Bro. James Perlett, who tragically passed away seven years ago. Congratulations to this years tournament winner Bro. Jim Ward, and to runner up Bro. "Big Al" Empey. Lewis Kempf, P.S. L.U. 2150 (govt, lctt,o&u), MILWAUKEE, WI The local hosted its second-annual American Boy Scout Labor Merit Badge Clinic in November. Through the efforts of Labor Liaison and Unit Chair Amy Domagalski, 49 scouts and their leaders learned what a union is, why people join unions and what unions do. They participated in several activities regarding collective bargaining, negotiations and attaining similar goals in different ways. They recognized the many concerns of working families and why they are concerns. The majority of the clinic focused on Wisconsin labor history, the labor laws influenced by labor and the legal struggles of workers. Local 2150 appreciates the opportunity to educate our young people in labor history and help them successfully attain their Labor Merit badge. Nancy Wagner, P.S.
L.U. 2320 (t), MANCHESTER, NH Local 2320 sends its deepest sympathy to the family of Bro. Larry "Bubba" Davis, who died in late November 2002 from an on-the-job motor vehicle accident after repairing a phone line for a customer with a medical emergency. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, four sons and a daughter. Larry, a loyal 16-year union member, worked for Verizon as a splice service technician out of the Conway garage. Larry will remain forever in our hearts. The T-6 has scheduled a grievance with the company for the internal/ external September 2002 surplus declaration and the associated layoffs. They will be challenging the external declaration. We hope that by the time this is published all our brothers and sisters whose lives were disrupted will be back on the job. Remember those strike funds August will be here before you know it! John Murphy, P.S.
L.U. 2358 (u), JACKSONVILLE, FL Thanks to many volunteers who made our Christmas party a huge success. To the delight of union and family members in attendance at the Local 177 hall, there was plenty of food, drinks and dancing. The "Rocking Horse," band put on a heck of a show. Valerie Gutierrez,
