Cold, Slow Winter

Some Local 654, Chester, PA, members who participated
 on a recent picket line.

L.U. 654 (i), CHESTER, PA It has been a long, cold and slow winter in the Northeast, and we hope the work will be breaking along with the weather. SM Electric was awarded the Florida Power and Light project in Marcus Hook. There are other projects along the river, as well as Chester County, that could make 2003 a good year.

We are excited to see a friend of labor in the governors mansion in Harrisburg, and look forward to the opportunities Governor Edward Rendells leadership will bring to our area. Local 654 thanks all who volunteered their time working the election.

Organizer Gio DAmato thanks the many brothers and sisters who helped on the various picket lines this past winter. The picketing along Route 202 got the attention of proposed projects in this area. These developers have opened their door to union contractors and we hope to see some work from them.

We are always looking for volunteers, even if its just attending a township meeting, getting involved with politics, or helping with a new committee at the hall. We need everyone to participate to keep growing.

Daniel Rafter, R.S./P.S.

Successful Seminar

L.U. 666 (i,mt&o), RICHMOND, VA Asst. Bus. Mgr. Bubba Gillend would like to thank all participants in the recent seminar given by Capstone Environmental Corporation. This contractors class, "Starting Your Own Business," had 24 participants, and three who attended are now signatory contractors. See details on our web page.

Organizer Butch Vest reports we currently have 15 salts out. Fourth District Organizer Terry Luckett held two classes, training 22 Local 666 members. Organizer Benny Sowers is working closely with the Richmond Building Trades to put pressure on Gilbert Southern, the current contractor on a power plant in Fluvanna County. We are trying to make an issue of the large number of nonunion, out of state workers. We are coordinating our efforts with other organizers throughout the country with the Labor Trac Network.

Bus. Mgr. Jimmy Underwood reports Anheuser Busch plans to spend $350 million on upgrades and expansions through 2005. Dutch Gap Line 6 is out for bid. Four union contractors are on the bid list. Westminster Canterbury has planned a $141 million project and two union contractors are on the bid list.

Lloyd Drury Honored

Wade Drury, Lloyd Drury, John Kincannon and
"Cotton" Roberts at the January monthly
meeting.

L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CA The good news is about the work we have some. Local 684 has been blessed this past winter with work for almost all our Book I members who wanted to work. Can this momentum be sustained or even reach Book II to help our brothers and sisters from other locals? Yes, but never as good as we would like it to be.

With sadness we note the death of Bro. Mark Martinez, who was killed in an accident in Las Vegas, NV. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Congratulations to retiree and former JATC member Bro. Lloyd Drury, who was honored for 60-years as an IBEW member.

Torrey Newton, P.S.

Congratulations to IBEW employees of Exide Technologies on their recent success on layoff procedures.

I attended the first legislative meeting of the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Council in Washington, DC, and met with Arkansas Congressman Boozman (R), Senator Lincoln (D) and Senator Pryor (D) on issues of trade deficit, health care, jobs being lost and tax cuts for the rich.

Please call your congressmen and voice what this administration (Bush) is doing wrong to the middle class families of America.
