April 2003 IBEW Journal

Welcome, New Members

L.U. 702 (as,c,catv,cs,em,es,et, govt,i,it,lctt,mo,mt,o,p,pet, ptc, rtb, rts,se,spa,st,t,u,uow&uw), WEST FRANKFORT, IL Southwater, a newly organized water utility, ratified their first contract Feb. 1, 2003. Local 702 is proud to welcome these new members. Congratulations also to Bus. Rep. Paul Noble on a job well done.

Our local currently has several utility agreements open. The main obstacle we are facing is health insurance. Bus. Rep. Matt Hemenway and the negotiating team have settled contracts at Robinson Transformer and Mt. Carmel Public Utility. Both agreements were settled with caps on their insurance, thanks to the hard work and solidarity of our members there.

At this writing, we have five journeymen on Book I. The work situation at present is holding, but with the economy this could change.

Considering all that the members have to face daily, I wouldnt want to face them without our union!

Hall of Fame Member

L.U. 704 (catv,em&i), DUBUQUE, IA A 50-year IBEW member, former Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Edward A. Rosenow passed away at the age of 77. He was inducted into the Dubuque Area Labor Hall of Fame on Feb. 1, 2003.

Bro. Rosenow was initiated into Local 704 in April 1949. He worked as a journeyman wireman for Tri-City Electric and Westphal Electric, Inc. Ed served as a trustee, on the Executive Board and on various committees. He was the Local 704 president from 1971-1975, and served as business manager/financial secretary from 1975-1986.

Ed was very politically involved, and his community work included serving on the board of the United Way and Salvation Army.

Barnstead International and Local 704 are currently working together to negotiate a new contract for the upcoming year. Barnstead is one of the manufacturing branches of Local 704.

The construction work has remained steady throughout the winter season. The outlook for spring and summer also appears positive.

Community Involvement

From left, Local 714, Minot, ND, members
Tim Schmit, John Dickman, Shane
Marmon and Ron Bartsch, with future
members Ashton Hager, Josh Bartsch and
Jorey Bartsch at the Minot Habitat for
Humanity House.

L.U. 714 (i,lctt,o,rtb,t&u), MINOT, ND We are nearing completion on Habitat for Humanity projects on two homes in Mandan and a third in Minot.

Our apprentices, under the guidance of Lab Instructor Kevin Kubisiak, wired the homes in Mandan. The volunteer crew in Minot consisted of both journeymen and apprentices. Special thanks to all. Habitat for Humanity has become another effective way to educate the public about the IBEW and our commitment to our communities.

As in many parts of the country, our area work picture continues to be relatively slow. There is some improvement in comparison to this past year, with control upgrades and outages at a few of the power plants in our area. We are currently negotiating our inside agreement, and with the economy in the shape it is, our Negotiating Committee has a tough task ahead of them.

Mark Hager, Pres./Organizer

What We Are About

L.U. 716 (em,i,rts&spa), HOUSTON, TX We are in the process of getting our organizing program in place to regain our Petro Chemical work. There is plenty of work to do, and united we can do anything.

Local 716 continues to be involved in community service activities and is committed to presenting to the public what the IBEW is all about. We have completed our first house for the Houston Habitat for Humanity, with great participation from our members. This is a huge success for our local and I thank all the brothers and sisters who helped.

Our JATC has just completed a successful blood drive to help with the shortage of blood in our area. We are also in the process of preparing for our second-annual Brotherhood Bash Picnic. Our event last year was a huge success.

The local union will once again participate in the Cesar Chavez Parade and any other parades and functions to put the best of the IBEW before the public. We are about pride, brotherhood, unity, quality and craftsmanship. The union is not ME, the union is WE!

Space Shuttle Tragedy

L.U. 756 (es&i), DAYTONA BEACH, FL It is with great regret and sorrow that Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart, killing all seven astronauts aboard. With our local doing work on many aspects of the space program, we take special pride each time there is a launch. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these great astronauts at this time of grief.

The work picture here is really slow, as it is elsewhere in the country. Our in-town work is slow, and there are only a few jobs at the Kennedy Space Center. With the Shuttle tragedy, we dont know of the future outlook, but the space program will continue though we may experience some delays.
