April 2003 IBEW Journal L.U. 804 (i&o), KITCHENER, ON, CANADA Of the many changes within the province of Ontario organizing, the most significant is the abandonment of the "Provincial Organizing Structure." Each individual local now controls and is responsible for organizing within its jurisdiction, including providing an organizer and implementing a "Strategic Organizing Plan." Accordingly, our union has hired Bro. Rod Hilton as a full-time organizer to continue to meet with the many un-represented electricians and apprentices within our jurisdiction. Welcome aboard, Rod, and good luck. Organizing is not a popular word among many members, but it is a necessity, as our survival and growth is dependent upon it. We must continue to strive to represent the majority of the workers within the electrical sector to protect the terms and conditions of our collective agreement. If you are uncertain about organizing, please register to attend the next COMET class at the local to have all your concerns, thoughts and ideas addressed. Each and every IBEW member is an organizer, and with your help we can overcome any hurdles. If you have any information regarding any nonunion worker, contractor or project, please contact Bro. Hilton at the union office. Brett McKenzie, B.M./F.S. L.U. 910 (i&rts), WATERTOWN, NY Our work picture this past winter was very slow. Work is expected to pick up in spring, with mill work, Fort Drum and windmills on Tug Hill. Construction Organizing Membership Education Training (COMET) classes will be scheduled again this year. Many of our new members will be receiving this important training. Notices will be sent to members when they are scheduled to attend. If you have any questions regarding COMET classes, please call the hall. The contract negotiations that began in January for our inside wiremen and apprentices will set our pay and benefits for the next three years. A more detailed report will appear in our next issue. Roger LaPlatney, P.S.
