PAC Committee Message

Local 86, Rochester, NY, Euchre Tourna-
ment winners are from left, front row, Leah
Shaffer and Evangaline "Sugar" Roscoe,
and back row, Dave Brown, Don Stalica,
Cliff Whaley and Dean Brickey.

L.U. 86 (ees,em,es,i,rts&spa), ROCHESTER, NY The downward spiral of our economy has resulted in a very slow work picture in our area. Some of our members have elected to travel to locals that have work, and we thank those locals for employing our members. We hope that our economy recovers soon so we can get our unemployed members back to work.

From the PAC Committee: It is time to pick up a pen or your computer mouse and contact your government and state representatives. They may try to solve the budget deficit by cutting school construction budgets and repeal the Wicks Law. This is unacceptable. We need their help in these difficult times, and if they dont, they a should be held accountable.

We recently held our Euchre Tournament for members and their significant others at our union hall. Congratulations to the following winners: 1st place: Leah Shaffer, 2nd place: Cliff Whaley, 3rd place: Dave Brown, 4th place: Don Stalica, 5th place: Dean Brickey and the consolation prize: Evangaline "Sugar" Roscoe.

Thomas Shaffer, P.S.

Retirees Honored

Local 94, Cranbury, NJ, newly retired members.

L.U. 94 (lctt, nst&u), CRANBURY, NJ In November 2002, the local celebrated the retirement of 23 of our members at a dinner at Doolans in Spring Lake, NJ, with over 200 members and guests attending. Congratulations and best wishes for a happy, healthy and long retirement to all.

Congratulations also to Pres./Bus. Mgr. John "Chip" Gerrity on his election as president of the New Jersey State Electrical Workers Association.

Thanks to all who participated in the successful informational picketing that removed the nonunion tree trimming company JAFLO from our state. The company refused to negotiate a contract that would have met our area standards, and as a result six JAFLO employees decided to come to work for union contractors in the state.

Changes continue for our fossil units. Deregulation, clean air standards and numerous other events have resulted in changes being made to the structure of our membership in some of the plants. Bus. Agent Buddy Thoman and Pres. Gerrity have done a good job staying on top of these changes and protecting our members.

Charlie Hassler,
Bus. Agent/P.S.

A Promising Governor

Local 98, Philadelphia,
PA, Bus. Mgr. John
Dougherty, left,
with Governor Ed Rendell.

L.U. 98 (as,em,i&it), PHILADELPHIA, PA Local 98 worked with surrounding locals to support the Rendell Campaign. New Governor Ed Rendell brings a lot of promise for strengthening the Commonwealths economy by improving its industry and schools and attracting business.

Mayor John Street looks forward to the support of Local 98 in his upcoming re-election campaign. All members are urged to volunteer. Local 98s own Rick Mariano is also up for re-election for City Council along with other council seats. It is a fact; involvement in politics and community service continue to be a factor in the employment of Local 98 members.

During the winter of 2003, some unemployment exists. The two stadiums are in full swing, and there are high hopes that gaming will bring much work to our jurisdiction as well as new schools to be built in the city as well as the surrounding suburbs. With the residential industry growing, avenues are being explored to secure work in this field.

In January and February, Local 98 sponsored two nights of ice skating at the Blue Cross River Rink for members and their families. Some 1,500 were in attendance. The annual Scholarship Banquet was on March 8, and the St. Patricks Day Parade on March 16. Both had great turnouts.

Bus. Mgr. John Dougherty says, "Get Involved, Get Out and Vote."

John J. Killoran, Jr., P.S.

It is a wise decision to form a consortium of IBEW, Plumbers and Pipefitters, Sheet Metal Workers and Insulators to market the skills of union craftsman to all contractors.

We welcome Bedard Controls to our family of signatory contractors.

At this writing, we are looking forward to attending the Electric League Trade Show. The IBEW and NECA will have a booth to get the word out.

All of us must do our part to help organize. Attend your local union meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Work safe.

M. A. Caglia, P.S.
