Chronic, Only Worse

L.U. 159 (i), MADISON, WIGreetings from Wisconsins capital city local, where our last report of "chronic" unemployment has become a bit more serious. As of this writing, 100 inside and nearly two dozen residential and DVD tradesmen have been idled by this unsteady economy.

The business office has implemented the overtime restriction that is provided in our inside agreement. The business office remains optimistic that as a couple of larger projects in the jurisdiction come "on stream," we will be able by this summer to send all of our membership back to work. This writer finds it unfortunate that our unelected leader continues to believe that the way to solve his growing domestic problems is to declare war on his daddys bogeyman.

Thanks and congratulations to all recipients of service pin awards at the locals December meeting. Most especially, recognition to our 13 50-year members, five 55-year members and to Victor Stluka, our 60-year pin recipient.

Fred Kempfer is the 2002 retiree who was misidentified in our last article.

Welcome TR Electric

Local 193, Springfield, IL, Organizer Glenn Baugh, left,
with TR Electric employees.

L.U. 193, (i,lctt,o,rts, spa&u), SPRINGFIELD, ILLocal 193 is proud to welcome a new contractor to our family. In an agreement that was six months in the making, TR Electric of Springfield became a union contractor. Along with TR Electric come eight employees and a good share of the Central Illinois housing market. We are certain that we can help the already successful TR Electric to continue to grow and provide the caliber of service that their customers have come to expect.

We welcome TRs John Sidener, Kevin Carter, Rich Stewart, Tim Vanpelt, Marcus Kolis, James Roher, Jacob Vicari and Jim Lazerri as our newest union brothers. We also wish to recognize Organizer Glenn Baugh for his efforts in securing the agreement with TR, whose owners were very cooperative with him. Thank you.

Our prayers are with the families of Bros. John Folder, Don Pennell and Gus Laubner, all journeyman wiremen who passed away recently. Bro. Laubner was just recently awarded a 75-year service award.

Please feel free to visit us at our new web address, www.ibew193.com.

Ongoing Organizing

L.U. 223 (em,govt&i), BROCKTON, MAIt has been an unusually harsh winter and work has slowed accordingly. Local contractors have kept many hands busy with several ongoing projects, including the Pilgrim Station shutdown, Brayton PT. Environmental protection projects and the Fall River Outfall Tunnel project.

Many thanks to Local 103, Boston, MA, for supporting many of our members for the past few years. It has really helped us. Organizing is moving forward on Cape Cod, with new shops signatory on the Cape, a newly set up signatory shop on the Vineyard and ongoing negotiations on Nantucket.

David Amaral, P.S.

Work Is Good

L.U. 231 (i,rtb, spa&u), SIOUX CITY, IAThere is plenty of work at this writing, enough to clear Book I and even put some travelers to work.

High Tech Electric has the new Tyson IBP Event Center that is just gearing up. They have also been working on a new highly automated freezer storage facility at Beef Products Inc. (BPI) in Dakota City, NE. Thompson is working on the second of two new Wal-Mart Super Centers and on a large freezer facility for Wells Blue Bunny in Le Mars, IA. Metro has some members working on the new Midlands Target store, and also on a good size addition to Marian Health Center.

There is a large amount of construction work on the horizon according to the construction bulletin, a periodical that gives updates on work that is being planned. Sioux City will be a busy place for a while. At this writing there were 170+ on Book II.

A litter pick-up along Sunnybrook is planned for May 3, with a rain date on May 17. Thanks to all who participate. Mail carriers will be having a food drive on May 10. Please bring your food donation to the union hall.

Please e-mail any suggestions for articles, information on deaths or retirements and photos to me at megavolt@cableone.net.

Extended Outage

L.U. 245 (govt, lctt,o,rtb&u), TOLEDO, OHDavis Besse shut down in February 2002 for refueling when reactor head damage was discovered. Since then a new head was acquired from a Midland, MI, plant that was under construction but never completed. Davis Besse loads fuel and moves closer to restart as they enter month 14 of their extended outage. Our members are looking forward with optimism to an April/May start-up date.

The sale of our Bayshore Plant was cancelled when the buyer could not come up with the needed cash. We welcome them back to the First Energy family.

The energy delivery side of the business continues to have multiple problems. Its been a busy winter not only on the home front, crews were also sent to Pennsylvania and Portsmouth, OH, for storm work.

We have one TV negotiation going on with ABC TV Channel 13.

We just settled contracts with Bryan Municipal and Tri-County Co-op, while negotiations to bring Hancock-Wood their first IBEW contract continue.
