Outstanding Apprentices

L.U. 640 (em,i,rts, spa&u), PHOENIX, AZCongratulations to Bro. Dan Gullick for winning the IBEW Seventh District/NECA Fifth District Apprentice of the Year contest. Dan was in the first graduating class from our new day school apprenticeship program, recently recognized as the Arizona Department of Commerce Exemplary Apprenticeship of the Year 2002. Thanks to Bro. Steven Duff who also represented Local 640 with an outstanding performance.

Inside agreement negotiations, with over 45 issues to be resolved, should have been settled by now. Thanks to all 40 members who participated on the sub-committee and to Ronald Materko and Dan Sieler who also sat in negotiations.

Negotiations with the Southwire Manufacturing Plant should also be complete. This plant is the most productive plant they own; together with a great working relationship with Local 640, a second plant is now signatory. Thanks to Negotiating Committee members James Bryant, Mikel Davis, Joe Standlee and Bo West.

Work is still slow, as it seems to be everywhere in the nation. Local 640 is proud of Bros. Joseph Davis (jw), Jimmy Haines (jw) and David Janecke (appr.) and all IBEW military men and women recently called to service. We pray you feel the love and support of this great American organization. Come home safe and sound!

Pres. Crowthers Retires

L.U. 648 (em,i,spa&u), HAMILTON, OHLocals 82 and 648 won a settlement against Active Electric for discrimination against union members in hiring. The settlement cost the nonunion contractor $15,000, plus a list of all his employees names, phone numbers and addresses, and he had to put two union salts to work. Bros. Dale Mitchell, Eddie Jaudon, Kevin Seymore and Javan Alexander each received a check for $3,750 before taxes. Thanks go out to these members for their hard work, along with Bros. Grady Mullins and Gary Corbin (Local 648).

Local 648 announces the retirement of Pres. John Crowthers. Bro. Crowthers has dedicated 35-plus years to the IBEW and Local 648. He served in many capacities throughout his career and always gave all he had for the IBEW. Good luck, Bro. John and thanks for all of your dedication and time.

Local 648 mourns the death of 52-year member Bro. John Slusher in February 2003. Family and friends will sadly miss John.

Three Members Called Up

Local 692, Bay City, MI, members working for Taunt
Electric at the Towers dorm project at CMU.

L.U. 692 (i,mt&spa), BAY CITY, MIAt this writing contract negotiations have begun, and we hope for a fair agreement beneficial to all of us.

Work is slowing down. The Consumers Energy, D.E. Karn Unit No. 2 S.C.R. outage is complete, leaving us with a substantial number on Book I, and two projects at Central Michigan University are also winding down. The new Bay City Hotel/Convention Center should put a few wiremen to work. We are expecting the Bay City Library project soon.

Please support our troops in Iraq despite differing opinions. We have three brothers who have been called to active duty. They are Phil Zywicki, Chuck Combs and Mike Grzwalski. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We must stand togetherespecially when times are tough.

T.J. House, P.S.

Topnotch Appointees

From left, Local 702, West Frankfort, IL,
Bros. Jeb Morris, Bobby Schott and Mark
Baker volunteered to dig the holes and
drop in the pre-cast bases for the new
70-foot light poles at the Jackson High
School Soccer Field. (AMEREN donated
two line trucks to assist in the project).

L.U. 702 (as,c,catv,cs,em,es,et,govt,
i,it,lctt,mo,mt,o,p,pet,ptc,rtb,rts,se,
spa,st,t,u,uow&ws), WEST FRANKFORT, ILWe welcome our new Bus. Rep. Terry Bunting, formerly an employee of SEMO Electric and a member for 16 years. We know Terry will be an asset to our local union and its membership.

We are currently holding our own in the work situation.

We are enjoying the benefits of our new Democratic governor. The following appointees are all IBEW members: Director of Labor, Director of Personnel Department of Corrections and Union Liaison to the Attorney General. Prior to the elections, these offices were held by less than labor friendly people or no office existed at all. For these reasons labor must be involved politically. Everything we bargain for in negotiations can be taken away politically.

Our union meetings are held the first Friday of each month. Please attend and get involvedthis is your union.
