Ed Linden was honored at the Faribault Unit picnic in June for his hard work and service for the unit and for the greater good of the entire local. During his tenure at Faribault Unit, attendance at meetings more than tripled, organizing became a high priority, and members became more politically active. L.U. 136 (ees,em,i,rtb&u), BIRMINGHAM, ALWe at Local 136 are just getting wound up again. Last year we elected Jackie Goodwin as our business manager, and Randy Goodwin as president. We also approved a funding arrangement to buy and stock a new apprenticeship training center. We are pleased to announce the opening of our new JATC Apprenticeship Training Center. With over 13,000 square feet of classroom space, a 5,000 square foot lab, and 3,000 square feet of office space, the center should suit the needs of our members, contractors and our apprentices for many years to come. Work in our jurisdiction is improving. We have a second phase of construction going on at a Honda plant in Lincoln, Al. Theyre expanding to twice the original size, and should keep up to 200 members working at least until Christmas. We also have an out of state non-union contractor working with us, and they may be signing a full letter of assent soon. They used Local 136 exclusively to do two earlier projects. We may be getting an instrument tech classification soon. That will allow us to expand our work within the jurisdiction. Courses for that class will begin in the fall, which further illustrates the benefit of our apprenticeship training building. We are having trouble with rising health care costs, much like every other local. Weve added most of our annual raises to the insurance fund to strengthen the fund for the near future.
