October 2003 IBEW Journal L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CASince August, no big jobs have appeared on the horizon and the summer school job work by this time is starting to get done. So if you do become temporarily unemployed, why not take state licensing classes at our own JATC? Get ready for the state license exam before 2005. On August 8 at Jacobs in Modesto, we celebrated the graduation of our apprentices. With traditional mechanical skills and new technology, our working brothers survive. Good luck you, guys. Torrey Newton, P.S.
L.U. 692 (i,spa&mt), BAY CITY, MIThe Tri-County Building and Construction Trades Council Organizing Committee recently accepted an out of board settlement agreement with Encompass, Inc. The settlement amount totaled $200,000 for 56 building trades people from six different crafts. The council filed ULP charges against Encompass in January 2003 for "fail to hire" and "fail to consider to hire" union applicants. The NLRB issued a complaint and the settlement came prior to going to hearing. Work is still slow with some job calls for Zone 1 and Zone 2, but we are hopeful that some new projects will come our way in the near future. We thank our neighboring locals for having some work in tough times. T.J. House, P.S. Members Complete Licensing Classes L.U. 700 (em,i,o&spa), FT. SMITH, ARAfter new licensing laws were passed by the Arkansas State Legislature requiring a state apprentice or journeymen license to work on jobs in the electrical construction market, Local 700 sponsored test preparation classes. Congratulations to the 28 members who completed the course, and to Kenny Vaughn, who was the first to pass his Arkansas state journeyman exam. A big thanks to Barry Richardson for teaching these classes. Other journeyman classes will be held throughout the year. Our trade is changing with technology, and so shall we! Brothers and Sisters, I continue to ask our contractors to bid jobs so they will hire out-of-work members from our referral procedure. When they do, please give eight hours work for eight hours pay. On our manufacturing side, Cindy Russell is our new chairperson, with Clif "Mule" Sutton filling the vice-chair. For now, jobs are holding steady, but with Exide building a new plan in India, who knows. Kenneth C. McClendon, B.M./F.S. L.U. 702 (as,c,catv,cs,em,es,et, govt,i,it,lctt,mo,mt,o,p,pet, ptc, rtb, rts,se,spa,st,t,u,uow&ws), WEST FRANKFORT, ILCongratulations to the recently elected and re-elected Local 702 officials. We know they will be an asset to our local and the membership. We have had some tough negotiations involving Wayne White Electric Cooperative. However, through the solidarity of our members, we were successful in reaching a fair contract. Negotiations continue for other bargaining groups such as Ameren Company, Frontier Communication and Newton Generating Plant. These companies want concessions while CEOs are assured of huge paychecks, big bonuses, and guaranteed pensions. We have about 30 wiremen laid-off right now. There are several proposed projects on hold due to funding issues. Marsha Steele, P.S.
L.U. 704 (catv,em&o), DUBUQUE, IAOur members employed by Westphal Electric completed the Americas River project at the Port of Dubuque this past summer. This impressive tourism center includes the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, $50 million complex that drew 53,000 visitors in the first month of operation. Currently under construction is a convention center, which will further enhance Dubuques riverfront development. Local 704 is proud to be involved with these projects. I join other IBEW members in extending condolences to the family and friends of Bro. Ken Anglin, who passed away June 12, 2003. Ken had been a member of Local 704 for 28 years. He previously was a co-owner of Advance Electric and was an active member, having served as an apprentice instructor. Those of us who worked with Ken will remember him as a man whose time ended too soon. Local 704 is pleased to announce the recent graduates from our apprenticeship program. They are Bros. George Splinter, Phil Hildebrand, Jeremy Freiburger, Dave Jutson, Matt Droessler, Corey Firzlaff, Tom Turner, Dave Wilson and Tom Naber. Ron Heitzman, P.S.
