November 2003 IBEW Journal

Gone But Never Forgotten

L.U. 2033 (mt&p), PINE BLUFF, AR-On April 17, 2003, retired Pres./Bus. Mgr. Roy Carrington was laid to rest at Holly Springs Cemetery in Star City, AR. He will be greatly missed.

Bro. Carrington served IBEW Local 2033 as president for 20 years. Roy was employed by International Paper Company (IPC) in Pine Bluff for over 40 years. Earlier in his career he was president of PACE International Local 898 for 15 years. Wishing to further his career, he entered the electrical apprenticeship program at IPC. While still an apprentice, he was elected president of IBEW Local 2033.  Roy commanded the respect of company management, union officials and his fellow union brothers and sisters. He had a powerful commitment to the labor movement. Honest, dependable, hard working, respected, fair-these are just a few words that described Roy Carrington.  His shoes and our hearts will not be easily filled.

Work Picture Bright

L.U. 2085 (i), WINNIPEG, MB, CANADA-Local 2085 member Brendan Madden was presented the "Highest Achievement" award for 2002. Bro. Madden completed his apprenticeship and passed his inter-provincial construction electrician exam with an exemplary record during his four-years apprenticeship. Congratulations to Brendan on his accomplishment and also in his dedication to Local 2085.

I would like to invite our members who have not taken COMET to attend our next class, to be held this fall. Negotiations are coming up in the spring; by increasing our market share in the industry, we will be able to talk about increases in wages and benefits. Also, we should be encouraging all our new members to be the best-as trades people and IBEW members.

The work picture looks bright for the fall and winter in our jurisdiction. We have just elected a majority NDP government in Manitoba and we hope the low unemployment climate continues in our jurisdiction.

RETIREES

Farewell to Bayberry

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, NORTH JERSEY CHAPTER-Our chapter bid a fond farewell to our traditional yearly summer fishing trip and vacation at Bayberry in Southampton, Long Island. We have enjoyed the Bayberry facility for nearly 40 years, but the property was sold. We will miss it and hope a replacement will soon be found. This year we held a joint session with the Bronx and South Jersey chapters, which was highly successful and enjoyable.

In addition to social activities, our chapter holds discussions on issues important to the membership at chapter meetings. Members were urged to ask their congressperson to support H.R. 424, which would remove all taxation of Social Security benefits.

We held lively discussions about remedies to improve the benefits of surviving spouses of members, COLA increases to our union pension and a funded long-term care benefit that other unions enjoy. We also discussed how to get full medical benefits for Local 3 Retirees and spouses who live outside the New York area and thus are not presently eligible for Magnacare benefits.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, WESTCHESTER/PUTNAM CHAPTER-Our May fishing trip at Bayberryland was well attended and coordinated, thanks to Chmn. Jim Tobias. The fish were plentiful and the weather was great. The accompanying photo shows off our catch.

Members enjoyed our mini-vacation at Bayberryland in August. The weather was perfect for beach and pool games. We topped off the week with a great barbeque run by Chmn. Ed Wall. We hope the good times at Bayberryland will go on for at least another year.

Our pensioners' luncheon was Oct. 29, 2003, at the Hotel Hilton, New York City.

Plans are being finalized for this years Christmas/Chanukah luncheon at the Lake Isle country club in Eastchester, N.Y. on Tues., Dec. 9, 2003.
