Annual Picnic

L.U. 440 (i,o,rts&spa), RIVERSIDE, CA--It was great to see so many familiar faces at our annual picnic. The local thanks the following contractors, providers and affiliates for their donation of raffle prizes: A&R Electric, Citizens Business Bank, Steiny & Co., American Realty, Morrow Meadows, Kaiser Permanente, Daniels Electric, Moore Electric, Johnson-Peltier, R.I.S. Electric, NECA, LMCC, MEI Electric, Hams Electric, Kent Electric, Mike Cox Electric, W.B. Walton, Baker Electric, Anderson & Howard, Multi Employer, Sierra Investment, Gregg Electric, Davis Electric and Holstein, Taylor, Unitt & Law.

Our appreciation to all the volunteers who set up, take care of the food and drinks, make sure things run smoothly and tear down. Without them we really would not be able to have a picnic. Horseshoe tournament winners were, 1st place: Bernie J and Pernie P. Balland; 2nd place, Javier Diaz and Steve Soria, Jr.; and 3rd place, Gregg and Jim Parr.

Congratulations to Cornelius Gradinariu on a job well done in the Western States Skills Competition. Instructor Ron Hagen has donated many hours preparing our contestants for the past four years.

A Busy Summer

Jack Wilhelm; Executive Board members Terry Tindale, Tommy Williamson, Rusty Becker, Danny Horton, Eddie Kincaid, Jr., Mike Barnes and Billy Payne; and Examining Board members Robert Biehle, Rob Conner and Rick Zerr.

After being sworn in, the officers attended a Leadership Training session instructed by Seventh District Int. Reps. Gary Buresh and Jimmy Sunvison. Our thanks to Bros. Buresh and Sunvision for an excellent session.

The Seventh District also held an Organizing School in Austin. The two-day, 20-hour class was attended by 26 members who are interested in learning more about the philosophies, techniques and programs associated with organizing. Seven were selected to attend an intensive five-day seminar at a later date.

Eric Does It

353s 100th anniversary party.

L.U. 586 (em,i&o), OTTAWA, ON, CANADA--Many union members tend to overlook a group of people who are the backbone of our organization. They are the quiet, hard-working members who help the officers perform the many never-ending tasks. We are fortunate to have a classic example of this group, who has shown us over the years what true brotherhood means.

Bro. Eric Johnston has been a member since 1961 and an Executive Board member since 1979. During this time he has quietly and efficiently donated time and energy to any cause or endeavor that helped our members and our union. Do you need someone to help the hockey or ball team as an equipment manager? Call Eric. Need some work or cleanup done at the hall? Chances are Eric has already started it. Does someone need a hand to move? Eric is there. Does a work site need checking? Send Eric. Putting up political signs, picketing a job site or helping at a tournament are all in his work description. Running the bar or as Sergeant-at-Arms, Eric makes sure our meetings are properly prepared.

Eric has certainly made this world a better place and we are honored to be his friend. Thank you, Eric!

Serving in Iraq

L.U. 596 (i,o&u), CLARKSBURG, WV--The Christmas holidays are a time for family cheer and togetherness but for IBEW brothers and sisters serving in the Gulf, its a real hardship. This local has one brother, Nicholas Duryea, serving in Iraq. We all pray for his safe return home.

The work picture in this central West Virginia local is still very slow, but I changed the batteries in my crystal ball for predictions for work in 2004. We expect that work on the power house project, hospitals, and a nine-story office building will all get started this coming year.

Butch Adams, P.S.
