December 2003 IBEW Journal

Optimistic About 2004

L.U. 640 (em,i,rts, spa&u), PHOENIX, AZ--Work is slowly picking up. We have occasionally referred from Book II. However, the Palo Verde Outage will be over in December, as well as the Coyote Hockey Arena. Hopefully, the Arizona Cardinals Football Stadium will start taking a few men, and the USAA Insurance job (Phase 2) and the Intel tooling will be predominantly union. We are optimistic that 2004 will be a good year.

The Apprenticeship Tri-Semester Day School Program continues to be a success. Thanks to the commitment of the staff and instructors, opportunities for continued education and the quality of training keeps increasing. Classes such as Grounding, Motor Controls, Transformers, Welding, Foreman Training and Instrumentation Tech. Certification are now offered.

The year 2004 is dedicated to the memory of deceased brother Robert Moran (apprentice) with a renewed commitment to safety and training. "Safety is everyones responsibility," but the journeymen must accept the moral responsibility for the training and safety of their apprentice, and the contractors need to support those journeymen in that endeavor.

Much fun and brotherhood was shared recently at our golf tournament and at our combination picnic-pin ceremony.

Brothers Mourned

L.U. 648 (em,i,spa&u), HAMILTON, OH--Our local has been saddened by the deaths of the following members: John Curd (45-year member) passed away 5/26/03; Harlan Lawson (44- year member) passed away 6/25/03; Middletown Kenny Brown (47-year member) passed away 8/21/03; Richard White (47-year member) passed away 8/27/03; Tracy Abney (33-year member) passed away 9/11/03; Michael Blanton (15-year member) passed away 9/15/03. Family and friends will sadly miss these brothers. May God bless them all.

We held our annual picnic at the union hall on June 28. We had old-fashioned style picnic baskets, games for the kids and adults, grills for all to use. Everybody had a great time. Thanks to the picnic committee for a lot of hard work and time. Our picnic committee comprised Bob and Jenny Angst, Chris and Erin West, Marc and Tracy Arminio, Barry and Anne Smallwood, and many other members helped out.

Our union meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Get involved in your local union. The retirees meeting is the Thursday after the local union meeting at 10 am.

Volunteering a Message

L.U. 654 (i), CHESTER, PA--The work situation has been good this summer, with many area colleges and schools; the refineries and a new power plant have also kept our work outlook favorable.

The local thanks members who volunteered their time installing our new speaker system at the hall, and also those who helped at Ogden Fire Hall. Volunteering informs the public of our commitment to our community.

Congratulations to the members who have completed their schooling as apprentices: Commercial/Industrial Program--Michael DiPadova, Julian Dougherty, Andrew Fleming, Michael Greskoff, James Hahn, Kenneth Hill, Christopher Honan, Robert McLain, Donald Meloney, Pete Mina, Ryan Mingioni, Donald Mulrine, Michael ODonnell, David Ohrt, John OReilly, George Penna, Christopher Reichenbach, James Thompson, Jr., Robert Treherne and Robert White. Residential Program--Richard McCann and David Smagala. Teledata Program--Lou Mozzoni and William Sweeney.

Welcome to new members who came in with Brandywine Electric. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings, and make sure you dont miss the Pig Roast or the Golf Outing. Call the hall for more information and we hope to see you at the next meeting.

Pass the State Test

L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CA--By this time the chill of winter approaches and the dust of the governors recall election circus has settled. With mostly small jobs helping our Book I, the hall still seeks possibilities from larger work still out to bid.

Business and labor work best as a partnership. Help make it happen by taking state certification classes at the JATC and pass the state test, and then well all enforce prevailing wage for qualified electricians.

Pickets continue at UC Merced. We hope one of our contractors will get some of this work. Its about time for our members to realize what union is, and to get out there, brothers and sisters of the IBEW, and get real with being union.

Always, Its Health Care

L.U. 702 (as,c,catv,cs,em,es,et,govt,i, it,lctt,mo,mt,o,p,pet,ptc,
rtb, rts,se,spa,st,t,u,uow&ws), WEST FRANKFORT, IL--Our new business representative is 11-year IBEW member David Bailey, formerly an employee of Ameren/ CIPS. We know David will be a valuable asset to our members.

Our work situation under the Inside Agreement is not promising, with 77 on Book I. The Outside Construction and Outside Line Clearance is steady. We hope the proposed projects will come through and put our members back to work.

The Ameren/CIPS members recently ratified the companys final offer. Highlights of the four-year agreement include pension increases and wage increases of 3.5 percent in the second and third years and 3.25 percent the fourth year.

Our local has been involved in difficult negotiations this year. We are currently in negotiations. Health care is at the top of the list.

In addition to the everyday endeavors of working people, as we try to get through life and care for our families, now the Bush Administration wants to mandate overtime pay cuts. Does their greed ever stop? Please remember these assaults next year when we vote.
