December 2003 IBEW Journal

'Redoubling Our Efforts

L.U. 340 (em,i,o,rts&spa), SACRAMENTO, CA-- IBEW members in California, as well as all working families, faced one of our biggest challenges yet with the recall of our governor. This right-wing Republican move to steal the governorship will jeopardize the gains working families have made in the last four years. The outcome means the men and women we support in office will have to redouble their efforts to protect the rights of working people.

Our work remains slow but if some of the projects planned get started, most of our members should have an opportunity to work this winter.

We are saddened by the passing of the following retired brothers: Glenn R. Crews, Oscar G. Lowry, Rex W. Peterson, Ermil "Slim" Osborne, Benito "Ben" Madrigal (brother of Local 340 member Joaquin "Hugo" Madrigal), Richard A. Briggs, Harold E. Wilmunder, and my father, Allen C. Steelman. We were also saddened by the untimely death of active member John P. Shipman, son of retired member Charles Shipman.

Some of you brothers knew my dad by his nicknames, "Arkie" or "Wheel," from when he was a member of IBEW Locals 465 (San Diego) and 301 (Texarkana, TX). Pa traveled all over the United States and eventually settled in Marysville, CA. He became a Local 340 member in 1965 and was so happy to attend the locals 100th anniversary last December. He believed in the IBEW union way of life and passed on those union values to my brother and me. We in turn passed them on to our sons who are now Local 340 members.

I know many of you share this family pride in the union way of live. If you believe in what you do and pass it on to your children, unions will prevail. We will miss our departed brothers. Their hard work and dedication will never be forgotten.

Local 354 Job Steward Kim Barraclough, Project Supt.Dale Owens (of Local 776, Charleston, SC), Asst. Supt.. Lee Taylor (Local 354) and General Foreman Jon Boudrero (Local 354) thank the hard working members who helped make this job a success.

Aiding Paralyzed Veteran

L.U. 364 (catv, ees,em,es,i,mt,rts& spa), ROCKFORD, IL--Although work for most members in our local is slow (with the exception of the residential sector) there is still much to be thankful for this holiday season. The Brotherhood, which we are all part of, helps us through the tough times.

Noah Currier, a U.S. Marine who served in Iraq and who lives in our area, was hurt in a car accident, which left him paralyzed. Noahs parents decided to turn their attached garage into a handicapped accessible living space for their injured son. Upon learning of their plight, local trade unions donated their time and craftsmanship, and contractors donated material to complete the project free of charge to the Curriers.

Local 364 Asst. Bus. Mgr. Tom Kindred coordinated the project and 20 of our members worked many hours to complete the electrical portion. Noahs parents, upon witnessing the selflessness, said that our collective action restored their faith in mankind.

Bus. Mgr. Kenneth R. MacDougall thanked the class for all their volunteer help, congratulated them on reaching the goal they set five years ago and said they should be proud that when a customer uses IBEW, they have chosen the best-trained journeymen in the industry.

JATC Dir. Daniel G. Sellers thanked and presented plaques to two former instructors who have a combined 50 years of instruction time--Brooke Moore for 27 years and Fred Krisch for 23 years. Bro. Sellers urged the graduates to recognize all the help they have received, not just from instructors, but from secretaries, committee members and others. JATC Chmn. Harry Linn also spoke.

The top scholastic award for combined classroom and job training achievement, the James W. Mayall Award, went to Kimber J. Karlson, with Michael Dankanich second and Kevin Murray third. Those three also had five years of perfect attendance, as did William Bourne, Alex Uba, Mark Vitek and Duane Wagenhoffer. L.U. 424 (as,ees,em,es,i,mo,o,ptc, rtb, rts, spa,&u), EDMONTON, AB, CANADA--Our annual Members Appreciation Banquet was held in September. Not long ago, we could list recipient of awards from 20 year and up. Now space limitations necessitate starting at the 40-year awards, proof we are organizing! Forty-year pin recipients were Volker Bahr, John Carlson, Dale Coombe, Robert Hoy, Norm Kiernan and Willi Peter; 45-years pins went to Alex Copan and Manfred Koy; 50-year pins to Henry Funk and Bill Rawluk; and a 55-year pin to past Bus. Mgr. Bob Lamont.

Retirees Julio Bailon, Cyrille Gagnon, Jack Grover, Jules Loiselle, Orest Melnychuk, Chris Naidoo, Ken Purcell and Ken Shepherd received the gold watch from Bus. Mgr. Sieben, their spouses a bouquet of roses. The winners of our annual 424 Apprentice Competitions also attended. 1st place received $1000, 2nd place $500, 3rd and 4th place winners engraved plaques, in each of the 4 apprenticeship years. The "veterans" and "youngsters" were mixed together this evening so that the apprentices could not only see that it was contributions from the past that gives them the benefits of the IBEW today, but that they might also be apprised of their role in completing the bridge to the future.
