"Show Us The Jobs" Tour Heads to Washington, D.C.

March 24, 2004

Workers from across the country converged on St. Louis to kick off the historic Show Us the Jobs tour March 24.

They are as diverse a group as one could find- these folks traveling by bus- one from each state of the Union and the District of Columbia. Among them are engineers, computer programmers, factory workers, law school graduates. They have a common problem-they are unemployed. They are not alone. Every day in America, 85,444 people lose their jobs.

So they travel, telling the story of what is happening in America to anyone who will listen. Tyrone, a retired National Guardsman and unemployed information technology worker in Washington, D.C. says that the government is responsible for outsourcing its own jobs. "That has to stop."

Cindy, 47, is one of the millions of workers whose job has been shipped out of the country. She worked for 26 years at BF Jeanswear in Alabama before the plant closed and moved away, putting 13,000 people out of work. She has been out of work for two years. She says: "I just dont see how we can take four more years of George Bush. The way were going, before long were going to be dependent on other countries for everything we need. And thats not good."

Jeff, an unemployed Ohio construction worker says: "We have to raise awareness that there are lots of people out of jobs. Theyre classified as discouraged workers, and theyre not counted on the unemployment rolls, but theyre still looking for a job. You have to have a job to live. If they keep sending jobs overseas, there wont be any left."

The group will visit eight states and eighteen cities, ultimately arriving in Washington, D.C. where they will join with union and community allies on Capitol Hill to tell lawmakers to create new policies that keep good jobs in this country.

The Show Us the Jobs Web site www.showusthejobs.com features personal stories and daily accounts ("blogs" or web logs) of the tour. The tour is sponsored by the AFL-CIO and WORKING AMERICA, an organization for nonunion working families.
