Ratify SBC Contract

August 2, 2004

CHICAGO -- The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 21 announced today that its members have ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement with SBC Communications, approving the contract with an 81% percent "yes" vote.

The settlement achieves IBEW Local Union 21 members' key goals, and resolves our union's major objectives of:

  • Job security and access to the jobs of the future;

  • Protecting health benefits for active members and retirees with no monthly premiums; and

  • Providing fair improvements in wages, pensions and benefits.

The new agreement affects 11,300 IBEW Local Union 21 members employed at SBC work locations in Illinois and Northwest Indiana, and was reached just a little over one month ago.

Local Union 21 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is made up of 14,000 members working mostly in Illinois and Northwest Indiana. IBEW Local Union 21 members largely work in skilled jobs in the telecommunications industry. IBEW Local Union 21, headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois, is the largest IBEW communications union in the United States and Canada and is the fourth largest local union in the IBEW.
