wiremen from one family.

L.U. 191 (c,i,mo,rtb&st), EVERETT, WA-With our recent apprentice graduation it was good to see another class turn out and it was nice to see the four-generation Bower family of Local 191 electricians pass on the tradition of IBEW membership.

Local 191 is committed to our partnering with NECA and would like to invite all members to attend a joint board meeting. Our meetings are the fourth Monday of the month at 4 pm at the Everett hall. No matter what your classification, it is important you attend and be active in your local. The local and the officers recently met with the residential unit to address their concerns in our tough residential market. During the meeting it was apparent changes are coming to make us more competitive in this market.

Thanks to Joe Peters for chairing the service pin banquet and to Mike McGhee for the third annual kids Christmas party.

Traffic Marker Lights

L.U. 193 (i,lctt,o,rts, spa&u), SPRINGFIELD, IL-The intersection of Wabash and Veteran's Parkway in Springfield has a history of being accident prone. The Illinois Dept. of Transportation contracted Egizii Electric to install new lane markers in the turn lanes of the intersection.

Local 193 members Joe Sullivan, Mark Schafer, Brent Arthalony, Chris Schafer, Jay Bogdanic and Ken Paoni spent about three weeks in traffic installing marker lights from Traffic Control Corporation based in St. Louis.

The lights, called "smart studs," are embedded in the concrete and work with current induced from a coil in the wire in the concrete to keep drivers in their lanes at times when visibility is reduced. This experimental lane marking system is also in use in a Chicago intersection and is reportedly being considered for testing in Peoria.

On a sad note, we mourn three brothers who lost their lives in November. Jeff Daily, substation electrician at City Water, Light and Power, died in a car accident. Journeyman wireman Tim Dougherty died of injuries sustained in a fall. Retiree Gildo Ferrantelli, a 73-year member, also passed away in November. These brothers will never be forgotten.

Organizing Drive

L.U. 196 (govt,mt,o,t&u), ROCKFORD, IL-At this writing our work picture for outside construction is very poor and not much to look forward to.

Our local feels this is due to the utility (ComEd) trying to buy Illinois Power. Now we've received information that Com-Ed will not be purchasing Illinois Power because lawmakers failed to pass the bill Exelon wanted.

We recently tried to get a representation election for the Flagg-Rochelle Park District. The District took it to a hearing before the Illinois Dept. of Labor. Local 196 won that decision. The Park District spent approximately $2,000 per person trying to keep the union out. The campaign started in April 2003 and the decision in favor of the IBEW was announced Nov. 17, 2003. All the employees at the Park District are elated to finally get a decision. The election should take place in December/January. Also we finalized the first contract for the newly organized Batavia Street Dept. This process took almost 18 months and the agreement was ratified by an 18-0 vote.

Annual Blood Drive

L.U. 212 (i), CINCINATTI, OH-We thank Bro. Charlie Kenser for his hard work and dedication to this local. Charlie took a position on our Executive Board and stepped down as press secretary. As the new press secretary, I hope I can fill those shoes. I am proud and honored to serve our local.

In October 2003, Local 212 apprentices came through in a huge way to help our city. The local conducted our annual blood drive, in coordination with the Hoxworth Blood Center, and we had 95 donors give blood. The next blood drive is scheduled for March 24 and 25, 2004.

When I entered this trade and became an IBEW member, I learned what "Brotherhood" means. Many members are fighting overseas, and we keep them in our prayers.

You may not always agree with a fellow union member, but remember that you are still brothers and sisters in the union. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion; listen to others and respect them so they will do the same for you.

Attend local union meetings, attend functions-whatever it takes to become a stronger union. Local 212 meetings are the first and third Tuesdays of every month at the union hall. Let's all mark our calendars to attend.

City Council Candidate

L.U. 223 (em,govt&i), BROCKTON, MA-Local 223, our officers and JATC Dir. Gregg Rego extend a welcome to our new class of apprentices: Nathaniel Amaral, William Borgeson, Tyson Cleaves, Keith Faria, David Joerres, Daniel Kelliher, Chris McClellan, Adam O'Connell, Adam Perry, Normand Raymond Jr, Jason Ruth and Robert Pierce.

Bus. Agent/Organizer David Fenton has stepped up to offer his assistance to the city of Taunton in his candidacy for the City Council. We wish him well and know he will be a great asset to all of us.
