Bus. Mgr. Fernandez Retires

L.U. 349 (em,i,mps, rtb, spa&u), MIAMI, FL-Bus. Mgr. Art Fernandez retired after 40 years as a Local 349 member, the last 26 of which he served as business manager. Bro. Fernandez can be proud of all his many accomplishments. The Executive Board appointed Bro. Bill Riley as business manager for the remainder of the term.

Asst. Bus. Mgr. Eugene "Buddy" Howanitz retired following 40 years in our local.

Work around the country is slow. In Miami, jobs are beginning to pick up, but not fast enough.

The annual Local 349 picnic was a great success with about 600 members and their families attending. Thanks to the Entertainment Committee and all who helped.

Remember to RSVP for our 100th anniversary event, set for April 2004. Tickets won't be sold at the door.

Work Still Slow

L.U. 354 (i,mt,rts,&spa), SALT LAKE CITY, UT-Work is still slow. Hoping things will be better in the spring. The VDV unit is in negotiations. Meetings have seen an increase in attendance. Welcome to the tower techs-hope to see you at more meetings.

Local members can now access the secured Web site, www.ibew.354. There are several places to visit; member's page, chat room, and the new on-line re-sign. Members can now sign Book I and re-sign monthly on the Internet. We also have computers at the hall for members to use when they stop by. Please register on this site and provide your e-mail or address and phone number.

Eight District Int. Vice Pres. Jon F. Walters and his staff met with our Executive Board in November. On the agenda was a renewed effort to organize the under-represented. I was happy to hear Int. Rep. Carl R. Baer say that we need to organize the organized first, with better member services. He also stated that members must return to believing that an injury to one is an injury to all. We need to stick together. Please get involved.

Service Awards

L.U. 357 (c,i,mt,o&se), LAS VEGAS, NV-The local union held its annual "Old-Timers" Christmas party with service awards representing more than 1,600 years of service to the IBEW.

Honored award recipients were: 60-year members Halley Buzik and Marvin Cannon, Sr.; 55-year members Charles Berg, Joe Dominguez, Daniel Laub, Franklin Levell, Lorne McKay, Vernon Nicholas, Jr., Joseph Royer and Donald Waldrip; 50-year members Robert Clark, Edwin Clover, Mario Colapelle, Obrey Davis, Oscar Freeman, Arnoldo "Arnie" Garcia, Frank Helbert, Gene Janski, Sparty Kaufman, Edmond Leriche, Thomas Nowland, John Quarmley, Thomas Scanlon, Hugh Shirkey, Ralph Stockton, Richard Trudell and Earl Wescoat; 45-year member H. Loring Keach; 40-year members Horace "Joe" Fleig and Doyle Sansom; and 30-year member Earl Griffin.

The service, dedication and commitment of these members gave all of us the opportunities we enjoy today.

The way to protect the standard of living these Brothers have helped achieve is to vote for labor-friendly candidates. If we want a positive change in this country, we must register and vote!

Storm Crews Return

L.U. 359 (u), MIAMI, FL-Our line crews have returned from up North where they helped IBEW brothers and sisters in the Carolinas and Virginia restore power after Hurricane Isabel. Storm damage was extensive. With so much wire down, countless poles had to be reset and all types of hardware replaced. IBEW crews earned respect in many neighborhoods for their safety and professionalism.

The nuclear plant wrapped up the refueling outage. Chalk up another quality job by the bargaining unit group. The mechanics, electricians, I&C specialists, utility workers and clerks...everyone did a fine job.

We had hoped to report an organizing success for the nuclear chemistry group (at Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie and Turkey Point nuclear plants) seeking IBEW representation. But unfortunately, the election was lost at the last moment. Company management and attorneys managed, through the usual veiled threats and promises, to thwart employees' effort to gain union representation. We learn from our mistakes and will work even harder to organize the unorganized.

IBEW members marched in solidarity with fellow AFL-CIO trade unionists to protest the Bush-proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement, which would expand NAFTA, accelerate U.S. job loss and further erode wages and working conditions worldwide.
