May 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 1439 (u), ST. LOUIS, MOElections are upcoming for our local union officers. Nominations will be held in November, elections in December and the installation of officers in January 2005 With our nations elections around the corner, we must remember that which was so well stated by Edmound Burke: All that is necessary for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing. That is still the case todaya timeless truth! We must remember that it is our civic and fraternal duty to vote our conscience. In so doing we vote our future and set the stage and the example not only for our peers, but also for our children as well. Ken Carroll, P.S.
L.U. 1501 (ees,em,mo,pet,t&rts), BALTIMORE, MDOur local held its election of officers in December 2003 and all incumbent officers were reelected. Bus. Mgr./Pres. Dion F. Guthrie was reelected to his 13th term in office. With an amazing 35 years of service, Bus. Mgr. Guthrie sets a career record within the IBEW Fourth District. During his tenure the local has experienced growth and financial stability. Our local purchased a union office and Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill recently transferred 228 members from the AT&T Relay group to Local 1501. The locals successes have given us heightened stature locally and nationally. Bus. Mgr Guthrie was elected in November 2002 to a four-year term as a county councilman in Hartford County, MD. Other Local 1501 officers reelected in December 2003 are: Vice Pres. Michael Kurtz, Rec. Sec./Press Sec. Thomas J. Rostkowski, Fin. Sec. Michael Sersen, Treas. Joanne Z. Clarke, Northern District Rep Robert J. Harmon, Canadian District Rep Chandeo Ramgoolam, Mid-Eastern District Rep Fred. T. Richards, Southern District Rep Anthony E. Behrens Jr. Newly elected to the Board as Western Central District Rep is William J. Iasielo, who has served previously on the Board. Thomas J. Rostkowski, P.S. L.U. 1505 (em), WALTHAM, MAOn Feb. 3, Local 1505 delegates attended the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Council (IUC) Conference in Washington, DC. The IUC mission in 2004 is to bring the out-sourcing of manufacturing jobs to the forefront of this years election campaign. Speakers at the conference included Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD), Senate minority leader and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House minority leader. The central theme of all who spoke was rebuilding our countrys industrial base. Conference delegates also went to Capitol Hill, where they met with elected officials and staff. Local 1505 representatives met with staff members of both Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) and Rep. Charles Bass (R-NH). Local 1505 representatives were also welcomed by Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA). Rebuilding the industrial base in the defense industry is critical. Some components in the products we manufacture are produced overseas. If these trends continue, we may even see our defense jobs shipped overseas. Our sons and daughters serving in the armed forces deserve the best American made tools to fulfill their mission. Bus. Mgr. Noel, the officers and our activist members continue to meet with congressional delegates in their home districts to keep these issues in the forefront. Betty Lapointe, P.S.
L.U. 1701 (catv, ees,i,o&u), OWENSBORO, KYAt our February union meeting Pres./Organizer Gary Osborne presented Bus. Mgr. Harold Baggett a plaque honoring him for 27 years of service as business manager and extending congratulations on his well deserved retirement. Bro. Osborne was appointed business manager/financial secretary to fill the remainder of the unexpired term. Bro. Osborne resigned as president/ organizer. Rec. Sec. Mike Roby was appointed our new organizer. We extend best wishes to all. Work in the jurisdiction is still very slow, with more than 120 on Book I. We do have several members at the Columbia Sports Warehouse in Henderson County and that project should be well under way at press time, taking about 30 members. The W.K.E Coleman Power Station project in Hancock County has been resubmitted for bids and we hope to see a union contractor successful in getting it. The JATC held its first six-hour journeyman update class in January. This class is a requirement under the new state licensing law. The JATC also will conduct OSHA 10 and Passport classes throughout the year. Contact the hall for future class dates. With sadness we report the passing of Bro. Don Arnold, who was employed at W.K.E.s Green Station Plant, and retired journeyman wireman Billy Rose. May they rest in peace. Tim Blandford, P.S.
