Keep Wal-Mart Out

Local 569 activists and their families joined
more than 15,000 people at a rally for striking
UFCW workers in Los Angeles.

L.U. 569 (i,mar,mt,o,rts&spa), SAN DIEGO, CA-The United Food and Commercial Workers strike is over! Local 569 members and their families extend our thanks and continued solidarity to our sisters and brothers in the grocery industry who held strong for health care for more than five months.

In an important primary election victory, 569 families in San Marcos helped to qualify for the ballot and win an initiative to keep Wal-Mart out of their community. This is an important step in our jurisdiction and we will continue work with other unions in opposing the Wal-Mart union busting philosophy and their irresponsible corporate practices in our jurisdiction.

With the primary elections behind us we are beginning to gear up for the important November elections by making sure 569 members and their families are registered to vote and by building strength in our communities.

569 members took an important step for the future when we purchased a building to house our growing local. In February we were proud to hold our first general membership meeting at the new hall, which is located just up the road from our Training Center.

Bush Economy

L.U. 577 (em&i), APPLETON, WIWork continues to be slow as the Bush economy moves on for his wealthy friends. Those of us who toil need jobs, not just a robust stock market. Please sign your COPE authorization cards and return them to the hall.

Thanks to Bro. Tom Van Heuklon and Social Committee members (Randy Lewins, Mike Parker, Jay Schraufnagel and Doug Schulz) for the huge success of the annual spring banquet, which had the Back Again Show Band, with Bro. Marc Miller on guitar. Some 225 members and spouses attended. Distinguished guests included 55-year member Robert Etka, with 50-year members Keith Ploetz, and Glen Sheveland.

The first class of apprentice technicians will complete classroom instruction by June and, after their indentures are complete, will advance to technician status. Robert Tieman Mourned

Local 595 Bus. Rep.
Wayne Livingston
recently announced
his retirement. Bro.
Livingston, a 40-year
member, served for
many years as local
union business
manager.

L.U. 595 (c,govt,i,o&st), DUBLIN, CALocal 595 turns a page with the retirement of Bus. Rep. Wayne Livingston, a 40-year IBEW member. Bro. Livingstons service to the local includes many years as Local 591 business manager. There will be a void at our union meetings due to the absence of Waynes detailed and amusing reports. Wayne, thank you for your dedication.

Local 595 mourns the loss of Bro. Robert Tieman. Bob became a member of Local 595 in 1957. He served on the Executive Board from the early 1970s and was our local union president from 1979 to 1984. Even after his retirement in 1990, Bob stayed actively involved while sharing his knowledge and levelheaded wisdom. His son, Robert Bobby Tieman, has follow closely in his fathers footsteps. Bobby has been a 595 member for many years and now serves on our Executive Board. The local extends condolences to Bobs wife, Mary, and the Tieman family. He will be greatly missed.

Contract Ratified

L.U. 601 (i&rtb), CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, ILThe membership of Local 601 has voted to ratify what may be the best contract in the area. It was a wonderful display of both sides working together to bring our membership an agreement we can be proud of.

Congratulations on a job well done by our Negotiations Committee: Bus. Mgr. Larry Cook, Asst. Bus. Mgr. Ron Henderson, Asst. Bus. Mgr. Mark Ferko, Pres. Mike Herbert and Rec. Sec. Tony Hubbard.

Work in the area seems to be picking up as spring approaches. Grocery stores, retail stores, schools, super computer building, Biotech/Post Geonomics Institute, and various remodels at the university are among the projects slated for the spring/summer.

The annual Local 601 Steak Stag will be held May 8, 2004, at the Local 601 union hall. Bro. Bob Woodard is organizing the event, which will include great food, door prizes and the perfect opportunity for meeting new local union members as well as retired members.

Congratulations to new retirees: Vice Pres. Dick Revell and Tom Wieczorek.

On Feb. 3, 2004, a great loss was felt throughout the Brotherhood when we learned of the passing of Bro. George Murray, at age 54. Bro. Murray was a strong union voice for 36 years and will be missed by brothers and sisters all over North America. He served his local as unit chairman and vice president for many years. The incredible turnout for Bro. Murrays funeral included members from many locals.

Seventeen members from eight locals in eastern Canada attended the Train-the-Trainer Course in Halifax March 1-4, 2004. These members, business agents, assistants and organizers will soon present COMET courses to members in their locals. Please sign up for this important course. It will open your eyes to a very serious need to organize and help your fellow members realize their role in assisting their locals organizer.
