May 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 659 (c,catv,em,i,lctt,o,st&u), MEDFORD, ORBus. Rep. Tom Ellis is returning to his previous utility job. We thank Tom for his contributions and hard word for the local and wish him the best of luck in the future. Lenny Ellis, a veteran journeyman tree trimmer who has been very active in our local, has been hired to fill the post vacated by Tom. Darrin Morgan, previous LMCC compliance officer, has been hired as our organizer to fill the post vacated by Ron Johnson, who is moving into Walt Conners previous assignment. Please welcome Lenny Ellis and Darrin Morgan to our staff. A NW Line Construction NECA three-year contract was ratified. At press time we are in ongoing negotiations with EWEB, Flagging, City of Roseburg and Avista clerical units. Upcoming event: Local 659 Picnic, July 31, 2004, at River Forks Park. Kathy Joy, R.S. L.U. 665 (i,rts,&spa), LANSING, MIA graduation ceremony for 41 graduating apprentices was held Feb. 26. Sharon Schineman was named 2003 Outstanding Apprentice and also received the first Don Surnbrock Award, an annuity that sends the recipient to the National Training Institute. The graduates are TeledataSteve Baecker and Kevin Webert; ResidentialJustin Larrison and Courtney Williams; Inside Wireman Marc Benson, Matthew Borsenik, Randy Carn, David Crowl, John Denniston, Brian DeWaters, Jaysun Dinning, Tyler Evans, Matthew Gerrish, William Good, Andrew Halloran, Michael Harris, Justin Hathon, Rodney Hogan, Norman Hosford, Michael Hunter, Rian Ladd, Matthew Logan, Cindy Lounds, Jaime Lugo, Michael Mihailoff, Nathan Mikko, Christopher Morgan, Corey Morrill, Jeremy Nobach, Robert Ramos, Keith Ross, Sharon Schineman, Michael Scranton, Eric Smith, William Smith, Gerald Storms, Duston Twitchell, Jackie Walker, John Weber, Jason Weidig, Patrick Wilcox and Aaron Wilson. A breakfast fund-raiser was held for Keith Spitzley, who is recovering from a serious neck injury. The Catholic Order of Foresters matched donations given that day. Several conscientious local members have shown their support for our unemployed by making anonymous monetary donations for those unable to pay their quarterly dues. Please contact the union hall if you would like to provide similar support. Jeremy Hidalgo, P.S. L.U. 673 (catv,i,rts, spa,t&u), PAINESVILLE, OHFour of our members recently appeared in television commercials endorsing Democratic candidate Capri Cafaro for the 14th Ohio District seat of the U.S. Congress. Bros. John Swickheimer, Bob Flash Southall, Vice Pres. Jimmy Howard and Bus. Mgr. Ron Gianciacomo took the time to help with Cafaros campaign. They also worked closely with our sister Local 573 in Warren, OH, in making the commercial. Their activism appears to have paid off. In the five-candidate Democratic primary, Cafaro received over 34,000 votes. Her closest challenger pulled in 11,900 votes. Incumbent Republican Steven La Tourette, who had no challengers, received 37,000 votes. If her numbers hold up, Cafaro could conceivably take the district for working people. Our biggest export appears to be jobs. In over seven years of Bush (father and son) administrations, not one net new job has been created. George W. has banned project labor agreements on federal construction, weakened the overtime laws, and sent jobs out of this country faster than you can say NAFTA. Its amazing. He did all that without ever being elected president. Think about what we could do if we stayed active and elected people who would fight for people who work for a living. Rick Toth, P.S. L.U. 697 (i), GARY AND HAMMOND, INIn March Local 697 Bus. Mgr. Robert J. Anadell announced his retirement. Bob has been the business manager/financial secretary for almost eight years and has served the local in many capacities throughout his career as an electrician. Born in 1942, Bobs brief start in the apprenticeship in 1966 was interrupted by a tour with the U.S. Army. He returned to the Local 697 apprenticeship program in November 1968, starting work with A&W Electric. He graduated from apprenticeship in 1972 and worked for Hyre Electric for some 25 years. During apprenticeship he served on numerous local committees and later served as an Executive Board member, vice president, president and trustee. While we are happy for Bob and his wife, Nancy, and hope for them Gods blessings in this next phase of their lives, we will also greatly miss Bobs positive qualities and leadership. The Local 697 Executive Board appointed Bus. Rep. Raymond Kasmark to fill the remainder of Bobs unexpired term. Ray has also served this local well in many leadership capacities, with the last eight years as business representative and organizer. Remember to register and cast your vote in this critical presidential election year. David A. Soderquist, P.S. L.U. 861 (i&o), LAKE CHARLES, LAThings are finally looking up for us. Our health and welfare situation is improving and we will be getting a new administrator in the next month or so. Our work situation is also improving, slowly but surely, with the Pinnacle Casino project, although the project is behind schedule because of weather conditions. It doesnt seem that we will need any travelers, but our Book I members should finally see some relief. We have started our new newsletter, The Circuit. It has been sent out to 25,000 people around our parish and we have gotten tremendous positive responses. We are also continuing our picketing of non-union contractor jobsites. Pickets have proven to encourage businesses to use our contractors. Im proud to be able to report some good newsLord knows we all deserve it. Harlan J. Duhon Sr., B.M.
