May 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 83 (u), BINGHAMTON, NYLocal 83 officers have been busy working on the placement of sisters and brothers in jobs after NYSEGs closing of the Ithaca General Office. Energy East took over many of these functions after moving these jobs out of state to Maine. On a related note, Local 83 is working in Albany trying to get legislation (S6079 Velella and A201 Cahill) passed that would require public utilities to keep customer service representative duties in New York State and the utilities service territory. Energy Easts new S.A.P. accounting, finance and treasury system, also worked from Maine, has caused many payroll problems. These are being worked out through numerous labor/management meetings. Local 83 was pleased to have IBEW Third District Int. Vice Pres. Donald C. Siegel speak at the March 3, 2004, union meeting. The topic was politics and organizing. Please remember to support our troops, vote and attend union meeting. Don S. Tuttel, P.S. L.U. 89 (catv,em,lctt,o&t), SEATTLE, WALocal 89 would like to recognize six union brothers and two union sisters who stepped up and went far beyond the normal call of duty in helping others. These technicians are: Robert Suhayda, Robert Wormley, A. Scott Craig, Cheryl Ziegler, William Sato, Dorel Ivan, Kenny Carlson and Lorie Ricciardi. They donated 15 days of their vacation time to help a fellow union brother who was in dire need. Because of health issues, the company was starting disciplinary action against this member, and the 15 days donated helped prevent his being disciplined. These same members also contributed monetarily to assist the brother with his financial burdens. This is a good example of union camaraderie and we applaud these members for a job well done. Local 89 has experienced loss of membership due to downsizing and lack of work due to the economy. Our NECA Outside Construction Telephone contract was ratified in December 2003. Douglas Witte, V.P. L.U. 95 (em,i,lctt, spa&u), JOPLIN, MOMembers of Local 95 express their thanks and continued support for our brothers who are currently serving military duty in Iraq [See Currents in this months Journal for details.] Our work picture is slow as of this writing. We hope things will be better in the spring and summer. Line Clearance Tree Trimmer and Stockman Driver units are in negotiations. The Missouri American Water Unit contract opens soon. We hope to see members at upcoming meetings. Remember to register and be sure to vote in the November presidential elections. Get involvedits up to you! Ron Lundien, B.M./F.S. L.U. 97 (u), SYRACUSE, NYBus. Mgr. Thomas Primero would like to thank everyone who was involved with the recent contract negotiations with PSEG at the Albany Steam Station (now known as The Bethlehem Energy Center) and the Power Pool (now known as New York Independent System Operator). Special thanks to Mike Freed, Mike McGuiness, Bill Hines, Marty Currier, Steve Godlewski and Mike Chamberlain, who all played special roles on the negotiating committees. The NYISO contract was ratified unanimously on Feb.18, 2004. The PSEG contract was ratified on March 9, 2004. We hope you have all seen a copy of our new newsletter, the Local 97 Reporter. Bus. Mgr. Primero has been working on this for some time now. The letter is paid for by ads solicited by an outside agent, then printed in a union shop at no cost to our local. Between the newsletter and our Web site, www.ibewlocal97.com, our members can be better informed. Dan Wismont, P.S. L.U. 99 (govt&i), PROVIDENCE, RIWork is just starting to slow down in the area; with the coming of spring we anticipate a short lull in construction and then full steam again. We welcome two new shops started by Local 99 members, Anthony Macari of best Electric and Moe Merida of Merida Electric. We wish them both the best of luck and prosperity. March marked the one-year anniversary of the death of Tommy Woodmansee, who so bravely sacrificed his own life for the hope of others in the Station Fire; we all miss you and honor you, Tommy. We have had several pickets and job actions recently; we thank all the brothers and sisters who have supported these efforts. Many traveling brothers have been helping out also, which is certainly what the IBEW is all about. Ask Organizer John Shalvey what you can do to help. Without us, he is only one man, with you he becomes 800 strong. Without labor nothing prospersSophocles Joe Walsh, P.S.
