L.U. 915 (i&mt), TAMPA, FLBro. Phillip Humphrey, our JATC director of 35 years, recently announced his retirement. Phillip has won many citations for his work with apprentices. He previously served as chairman of the National Electrical Directors Association. As JATC director, Bro. Humphrey was in charge of two training facilities, one in Ft. Myers and one in Tampa. Approximately 185 apprentices are enrolled in the Local 915 JATC program, which has two full-time instructors and four part-time instructors. Phillip has been a member of Local 915 since 1960. He followed in his fathers trade and that of other Humphrey family members, all of whom have been a credit to the IBEW. Phillip says he is first going to catch up on all his honey do duties and then get in a lot of fishing and hunting. We all wish Bro. Phillip the very best of luck and a long and happy retirement Bob Kaiser, P.S. L.U. 1049 (lctt,o&u), LONG ISLAND, NYLocal 1049 is pleased to announce that we have a new four-year agreement with our largest employer, KeySpan Corp. Agreement came less than three hours before an authorized strike deadline. We were not only successful in negotiating a zero dollar weekly contribution to medical, dental and prescription premiums, but we also negotiated a 14.2 percent compounded wage increase over the term of the agreement. None of our success would have been possible had it not been for the support and solidarity of the membership. With six days to go the members gave a 100 percent strike authorization vote to the Main Negotiating Committee. On their own members arranged spontaneous rallies at all of the operation headquarters and power plants. The day before the deadline, over 1,000 of our members from the utility, craft and tree divisions united and marched in solidarity. On the last day of negotiations many of our political allies called the company and voiced their support for Local 1049. On behalf of Bus. Mgr. Ralph Ranghelli, I would like to thank all the members for their support and solidarity. Without that we would not have been so successful. Thomas J. Dowling, R.S.
L.U. 1141 (i,rts&spa), OKLAHOMA CITY, OKOn Jan. 23, 2004, IBEW Local 1141 completed renovations on a new multi-purpose facility located at 227 S.E. J Avenue in Lawton, OK. The building is the focal point of the unions educational efforts and will serve as a base to organize and recruit new members in the southwestern counties of our jurisdiction. Dedication ceremonies and related festivities are planned for some time in May. The brothers and sisters of our local wish to pay respect to our retirees. A lot of good craftsmen have hung up their tools in the last year. Most have gone fishing but are not forgotten. Thanks for your work, your dedication to the IBEW and for teaching us the trade. H. Marty Crain Jr., B.M./F.S. L.U. 1249 (catv, lctt,o,t&u), SYRACUSE, NYWe are saddened to report the recent passing of former Vice Pres. Joseph T. Leahey. Initiated into the IBEW in 1966, Joe was a journeyman lineman who loved this trade. He served on our Executive Board in the early 1990s. In 1997 he was appointed assistant business manager/organizer. Bro. Leahey was responsible for negotiating contracts with several municipals throughout the jurisdiction and was adamant about recruiting new members. No matter what Joe did, whether it was in the field or at the office, he always did an exemplary job! Joe was a great union man and friend. He will surely be missed by all who knew and worked with him. Our heartfelt sympathy to Bro Leaheys family: his wife, Madelaine, James, Anne-Marie and Rudi. The work situation remains fairly good in our area. Currently there are approximately 35 linemen on the books. With spring arriving, we hope we will have full employment again. Remember: Buy union products and invest in America by purchasing products labeled Made in the U.S.A. William C. Boire
L.U. 1307 (u), SALISBURY, MDWith the fall election approaching, the time has come to make a push to get a friend of labor back in the White House. Make sure you are registered and go the polls. In 1992, when Democrats took over the White House, this country had a huge deficit. At the end of that Democratic administration, the deficit had been erased and there was actually a surplus. Pres. Bush has shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history. We may never recover from another four years at this pace. In George W.s first year in office, more than 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues. Its time to turn this thing around. Bush and Cheney have roots deep in the oil business. Its interesting that gasoline prices have soared. A known friend of Kenneth Lay, George W. would like to change Social Security and he supported cuts in health care for war veterans. And speaking of Kenneth Laynote that more time and money were spent on investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating Enron, sponsor of the biggest corporate rip-off in history.
