May 2004 IBEW Journal RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 449, POCATELLO, IDLocal 449 retirees meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. The site of the meeting is posted in the IBEW Local 449 newsletter. This club covers an area of approximately 100 miles and we seek a a central location for meetings. In the winter many members are absent, as snowbirds fleeing to the South, so the meeting is held in Pocatello. During summer and fall the meeting is held in Blackfoot, ID. Each month we begin with a business meeting. After the business, members play cards and then go to lunch as a group. In December a Christmas party is held with union hall employees as special guests. As a special project in December 2003 a donation was made to the local food bank. The harsh winter weather has put an extra strain on demands of local food banks. As with most organizations, this club struggles with membership. Potential members are contacted by phone each month to encourage attendance. We are small in number but large in companionship and enjoyment at our monthly meetings. Lou Wetherbee, P.S.
RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 595, DUBLIN, CAThis article about our wonderful club is long overdueby about 31 years. Our club was chartered in 1973 and this is our first article. Eleven years ago, a membership drive brought in many new members, spouses or partners included. We now have 500 members. Many reside out of state or beyond. One couple lives in Australia. These members do support the club. Once a month we enjoy a trip to some interesting spot with lunch at a fine restaurant. Fourteen trips are planned this year. We recently returned from seven days in Las Vegas. Additional long trips: Yosemite, Branson, New Orleans and Tahoe/Reno. Day trips include casinos, races, plays, the Asparagus Festival, etc. We also put out a monthly newsletter and hold a catered luncheon the second Friday of each month. Mid-August brings our annual barbecue. For the holiday season contractors donate money or gifts for a raffle, which usually generates $5,000 to $7,000. The Electrical Contractors of Alameda County Trust, NECA and the Pension and Health Plan administrator have donated substantially to our general fund. Local 595 takes care of our paper and postage. Were so very lucky. Jeannie Morris, P.S.
RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 639, SAN LUIS OBISPO, CAThe Retirees Club and active members of Local 639 hosted their 20th annual Headstart Christmas Party on Dec. 5, 2003. We provided a visit with Santa, breakfast, games and entertainment, and a bag of Christmas presents to more than 150 children who participate in the SLO County Headstart programs. The Retirees Club organizes the event, with assistance and support provided by the active members of Local 639. The food and gifts are donated by local merchants and other non-profit groups. Our thanks go out to all who support us in providing a merry Christmas to children who might otherwise not have one. Bill Papich, P.S.
RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 654, CHESTER, PAThe Retirees Club 2003 Christmas luncheon went off without a hitchno ice storm to content with. Over 70 retirees, spouses and friends were guests of the local union and they are very appreciative. I took the old composition notebook to the luncheon as in the past so anyone could write his or her contribution for the Journal. There were 31 entries, some of which are listed below: Retirement isnt as good as I thoughtits better. Great to get together with old friends and talk about old times.Larry Meteger Had a good year after [recovering from] a heart attack.Len Minnick It was great to see my old friends.Paul and Nancy Riale I dont have time to do nothing. Its always good to see everybody.Werner and Jean Blair Put these retired brothers back to work. One of them for sure is driving me nuts!Mary Ellen, wife of Ray McCool. Speaking for myself, I always enjoy the get-togethers. Still, I wonder why after members fish their glasses out of their pockets, and before they can write in the book, so often you hear: I remember, years ago . T. Francis Jeep Hanley, P.S. RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 824, TAMPA, FLThe Retirees Club of Local 824 met Jan. 14, 2004. Attorney Anthony Cortese was our guest speaker. The main topic of discussion was Verizon insurance and the exorbitant prices we are forced to pay to get decent insurance. Mr. Cortese gave us many very interesting suggestions and we are investigating our options. Our attendance was not as good as we had anticipated but we feel a lot was accomplished. We enjoyed a nice luncheon. If any other local unions have ideas on how we can increase our membership, or questions/ideas on other union matters relevant to retirees, we would appreciate a call at (813) 626-5136. Betty Watson, P.S.
