June 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 500 (u), SAN ANTONIO, TXBus. Mgr. Artie Kocian and Bros. Paul Brock, Elias Lopez, Charlie Hinders, Gary Faktor and Jimmy Pierdolla attended the 2004 Texas State AFL-CIO COPE Convention in Dallas. The convention spelled out the political issues and stressed the importance of union support for labor-friendly candidates. In a true testament of solidarity, over $4,000 was raised in support of 70,000 grocery workers then on strike in California. The IBEW co-sponsors "Helmets to Hardhats," a program begun last year for veterans leaving the military in search of a private sector job. Many of these skilled electricians exiting the military would be great assets to fill the ranks of the IBEW. To date, 13,000 veterans have registered in the program and 82,000 union contractors participate. If you know a veteran who might be interested, information is available online at www.helmetstohardhats.org. Charlie Hinders, P.S.
L.U. 520 (i&spa), AUSTIN, TXSince the first of this year, we have seen many changes here at Local 520. In January, we entered a new Health Plan with Humana. In February the local called a special meeting to discuss and implement a market recovery plan. That plan was voted in and currently a few of our members have manned these jobs. March saw our new web site unveiled (http://www.ibew520.org). This new site is more technologically up-to-date and user friendly. The site will be a tool for us to inform our members of community activities, elections, political activities and other items of interest. Also in March, we entered into partnership with Habitat for Humanity to assist on 22 projects this year. Congratulations to Sister Susie Simpson: She became the first female officer of Local 520 by filling a vacancy on the E-board. Lane Price, R.S./P.S.
