L.U. 640 (em,i,rts, spa&u), PHOENIX, AZCongratulations to Bro. Gerald Lindley, who was selected to represent Local 640 in the Seventh Districts "Apprentice of the Year" competition.

In 2004 we are committed to improving safety awareness and strengthening the spirit of brotherhood among our membersthus the third annual Softball Challenge Picnic (JW vs. apprentice) set for June 5.

Currently the journeyman wiremans scale is $21.55, with $2.96 in Health and Welfare, $1.03 in Pension and $1 in Annuity. A special meeting will be held in June to decide the allocation of a 45-cent increase.

Local 640 congratulates our recent retirees. We also congratulate recently retired Bro. Willliam H. "Bill" Turner, who served for many years as IBEW Local 570 business manager and is past president of the Arizona State Electrical Workers Association.

November elections are coming up. Local 640s goal is to get all its members and their families registered to vote. Just one state can make a difference.

Number One Priority

L.U. 684 (c,i,o,rts&st), MODESTO, CABrothers and sisters, the purpose of our organizing is not just to drag in new members to compete for your shrinking share of the pie. The vision of Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill is this: That all our members be possessed of this urgent sense of mission for each one of us to work together to develop new and bold innovative strategies to fight the growing nonunion corporate giants that are stealing our work. Were electricians. We make things worktogether, all of us together.

At press time we were looking forward to the Local 684 annual picnic on May 22 at Hagaman Park along the Merced River.

Bro. Jim DeWilms, our organizer, has taken a turn for the worse in his battle with cancer. Five years ago, when I was working in the Bay Area, my pickup broke down and no one anywhere would help me. Jim dropped everything, rented a trailer and rescued my truck and me. I will never forget what he did for me that day. Humbled before our Maker, pray for Bro. DeWilms.

Our union is like the flag of our country. Invisible every day except through the eyes of all who fought for it.

The Bush Squeeze

WEST FRANKFORT, IL
Have you heard the old saying, "You cant squeeze blood from a turnip"? Well, the Bush administration certainly is "squeezing blood" from the working middle class. Remember when the middle class was recognized as the backbone of our country? Today, working people are being squeezed from every direction by this administration.

Corporate profits rose 25 percent last year, but workers wages remain stagnant. We have to change this trend. All members should go to the polls in November and vote to keep our jobs.

At this writing, we have 77 members on our Book I for inside wiremen. Just a few calls for work are coming in now. Line clearance and line construction work is holding steady. Outside telephone construction is at a low. Demanding negotiations are at every table, beginning with health insurance.

Work safe and attend your union meetingsits your future.

Get Out the Vote

L.U. 716 (em,i,rts&spa), HOUSTON, TXWe are working to get our membership energized for the November elections. Efforts are ongoing to get all our members registered to vote and to make sure they have access to information on issues of importance to working families so as to cast their ballots wisely.

The work situation is still slow but we hope that will change as a result of our organizing program. The locals communications with prospective new contractors are continuing in our drive to gain market share.

In recent months we participated in numerous community events such as the St. Patricks Day parade, Cesar Chavez Day parade, and the Cinco de Mayo dance held at our hall. We also held our Brotherhood Bash picnic and golf tournament in April. We encourage our members to become more involved.

Local union elections are June 5officers and delegates to the 37th International Convention will be elected. Those elected to office will need the support and participation of all members to achieve important goals.

Photovoltaic Installation

L.U. 756 (es&i), DAYTONA BEACH, FLThe work picture here remains slow. The commercial contractors seem to be holding steady and a few members have gotten out on residential jobs.

Our JATC, apprentices and instructors are installing a 4-kw photovoltaic system on the roof of our union hall. Obviously it wont be enough to pay the electric bill, but the solar installation project will be a valuable training tool for our apprentices.

Congratulations to the following brothers receiving 50-year service pins this year: Donald Carter, Byron Cox, Lawrence Craddock, Morris Culpepper, Joseph Davies, Arthur Doughty, James Haller, James Harrison, Leroy Hawkins, Fred Hughes, Bryant OQuin, Lawrence Parker, Richard Ransom, Martin Severson, Hubert Smith, Clyde Snell, George Vaughn, Everett Waters, James Westberry, Frederick Williams and Paul Jeans (posthumously). Bro. Peter Parise will receive his 55-year pin.

If you will be away during the November elections, remember to request an absentee ballot request form in advance. Be sure to vote and lets show George W. the unemployment line!

John W. Barrington, P.S.
